The anarchists' electoral abstentionism implies not only a conception that is opposed to the principle of representation (which is totally rejected by anarchism), it implies above all an absolute lack of confidence in the State. And this distrust, which is instinctive in the working masses, is for the anarchists the result of their historical experience with the State and its function, which has, at all times and in all places, resulted in a selfish and exclusive protection of the ruling classes and their privileges. Anarchist abstentionism strips the State of the constitutional fraud with which it presents itself to the gullible as the true representative of the whole nation, and, in so doing, exposes its essential character as representative, procurer, and protector of the ruling classes.

1893 -- The day after a riot of the unemployed, Emma Goldman addresses a public meeting, in NY city urging those in need to take bread if they are hungry. Tomorrow evening she helps lead a procession of several hundred anarchists to Union Square, where, among many other speakers, she addresses a crowd of the unemployed.

A World Without Ice Caps
When the polar ice caps melt, sea level will rise. That’s happened earlier in the history of the world, and it appears it will happen again. In this edition of Radio Curious, the first of a two part series on global warming and sea level rise, we visit with Peter D. Ward, a paleontologist and professor of biology and earth and space sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of “The Flooded Earth: Our Future in a World Without Ice Caps,” in which he describes expected condition in 2050, 2300 and 2500.
