The Battle of the Skating Shows

by Stephanie Earp, posted Nov 22nd 2010 7:10PM

Tonight at 8PM, the second season of 'Battle of the Blades' will conclude on CBC after naming a winner from among the three remaining teams. Mere seconds after Bryan Adams claims in song that there will never be another tonight, ABC and CTV will attempt to prove him wrong, debuting 'Skating with the Stars' at 9PM ET/PT. I have a number of problems with this -- so many in fact, that I'm going to resort to a bulleted list format.

    1. Why not franchise 'Battle of the Blades' instead of 'Skating With the Stars'?

If the U.S. had come up with a successful skating competition show, you'd better believe we'd be watching some Canadianized version of it, the rights bought and paid for. Call this hypothetical show 'So You Think You Can Battle with Celebrity Blades of Canada' or whatever, but if the success had been developed south of the border, and if Canucks had decided to go ahead with our own version without buying the rights, there'd be a lawsuit.

Cristina tries her hand at bartending.['Grey's Anatomy' - 'Slow Night, So Long']

It's all about the night shift this week on 'Grey's Anatomy;' all the attendings are off celebrating Derek's new grant and all the residents had to deal with the drama back at Seattle Grace. It's good to know that apparently other attendings exist in this hospital outside of the main cast.

Cristina has moved from randomly throwing a house-warming party, to becoming a bartender. She's taking a slow progression to recovery, but the best part of the progress was watching Derek act like an older brother for her; watching from the bar, making sure that she was okay until Owen showed up was chivalrous.

'Cougar Town' Moment: Jules Loses Big Joe (VIDEO)

'Cougar Town' Mourns the Loss of Big JoeOne of the things we've learned over the season and a half of 'Cougar Town' (or, as it was titled this week, 'It's OK To Watch A Show Called Cougar Town') is that you don't get between Jules Cobb and her wine. And one of the other things we've learned is that Jules is really, really, really protective of her son Travis.

Travis' new girlfriend Kirsten -- a grad student! -- found out about both in last night's funny episode. My guess is that Kirsten is there to pose a real challenge to Jules' smother hen tendencies, and it looks like she's game to go into battle, especially when she's being coached by Laurie, the towniest "townie ho" in all of Florida.

But we also know that Kirsten is a bit of a klutz, and she's claimed her first victim: Big Joe.

Man Shoots His TV in 'Dancing With the Stars' Rage

A Wisconsin man angry at the continuing success of Bristol Palin on 'Dancing with the Stars' Monday night blasted his TV with a shotgun as she waltzed her way into the show's finale.

According to The Smoking Gun website, Steven Cowan allegedly became so enraged that he fired a shotgun round into his television, triggering a 15-hour standoff with local police.

His wife called the cops after Cowan -- who'd been drinking -- allegedly pointed the shotgun at her. Janice Cowan said that they were watching the show when "he jumped up and swore ... Steven was upset that a political figure's daughter was dancing on this particular show when Steven did not think that she was a good dancer."

Critics have said that Bristol's benefiting from the popularity of her politician mother, Sarah Palin, with Tea Party supporters and the largely older, female viewers of the show voting for her in droves. Each week she has survived elimination despite never having earned the highest score, while other, arguably better, dancers have been nixed.

Only three couples will compete in the 'Dancing With the Stars' finale next week: Which star got the bad news tonight that the show will go on without them?

All four had a great night last night, but whose time is up? Disney star Kyle Massey? Singer Brandy? Teen activist Bristol Palin? Or 'Dirty Dancing' star Jennifer Grey?

Keep reading to see if your votes -- or your decision not to vote last night -- influenced who'll compete for the Season 11 Mirror Ball Trophy.

Desperate Housewives['Desperate Housewives' - 'Sorry Grateful']

It's Thanksgiving time on Wisteria Lane! Even if all the housewives, including McCluskey and Renee, were featured in the episode, the main storylines revolved around recurring characters: Keith's parents, the Sanchez family, and the crazy mother-daughter duo of Felicia and Beth.

If I were to list what I'm thankful for TV-wise, one of the Top 10 items on my list would be that I'm thankful for the 'Desperate Housewives' writers for giving us an entertaining, mysterious, dramatic and heartbreaking at times, yet also fun, season.

Mark talks to a drunk Callie with a new haircut.['Grey's Anatomy' - 'Something's Gotta Give']

'Grey's Anatomy' has proved that the main cast was too inflated. With Jessica Capshaw on maternity leave, the characters have been shuffled around more, and it gave Callie the opportunity to have scenes without Arizona by her side. Having the main characters actually interact outside of their main circles was a breath of fresh air. Derek with Cristina is always a combination that never gets explored, yet the two of them share a great bond.

The writers are starting to throw Alex under the bus to make the audience like both Jackson and April. Alex was finally learning the Arizona way of making any situation work and not giving up hope. The interaction with April and Alex was cringeworthy. April probably didn't think she'd lose her virginity in a hospital anyway.

    Desperate Housewives['Desperate Housewives' - 'A Humiliating Business ']

This week's 'Desperate Housewives' storylines were all about humiliation: Bree tried to hide a secret that she felt could humiliate her, and Susan accepted a job that made her feel like a "loser" on some levels.

Elsewhere on the lane, Keith's parents (played by Nancy Travis and John Schneider) were introduced, Beth continued to win Paul over, and Bob and Carlos became best buds. Oh, and Felicia Tillman made a jaw dropping guest appearance that'll be the talk around the water cooler tomorrow!

'Cougar Town' Moment - Andy Pulls a Keyser Soze on Jules

Ian Gomez and Courteney Cox in 'Cougar Town' on ABC(WARNING: If you've never seen 'The Usual Suspects,' stop reading now. It's been out for 15 years, though, so you really should have seen it by now...)

We don't know a heck of a lot about Andy Torres, do we? Aside from his affection for Bobby and his skill at the game Penny-Can (all together now: "Penny Can!"), we basically know him the way Jules Cobb does... via how he and Ellie interact. So it was fun to hang out with Andy a bit on this week's 'Cougar Town' and what makes him tick.

What did we find out? That this short, bald teddy bear of a man is really an "evil genius," as Ellie said, a 21st century Keyser Soze. Only Andy doesn't manipulate people in order to get them to steal and cause mayhem. He manipulates people to give him affection. And, as smart as Ellie is, she always seems to fall for it. Now Jules has, as well.

Scene from 'Modern Family' - 'Chirp'['Modern Family' - 'Chirp']

One of the more interesting things about 'Modern Family' is that, even when there's an episode that produces less than gut-clenching laughter, it's still infused with enough emotion to make it very watchable.

So while 'Chirp' only generated one really big laugh for me -- probably because I have a dirty mind -- and a couple of smaller ones, it was still a decent episode because both Jay and Phil looked utterly human this week. I was especially intrigued by Phil, who showed a side of himself that we rarely see: one that's a bit worried and scared for the future.

Trick or treat? The Scavos, Solises, and Delfinos got tricked on last night's 'Desperate Housewives.' Actually, Susan was probably cursed ... Meanwhile, Paul and Bree received treats. As for Renee, it could be argued that she falls under the "trick" category as Lee took part of the spotlight away from her (see picture on the right). Lee rocked the house as usual!

Halloween is always an eventful day on Wisteria Lane, and this year was no different.

Courteney Cox and Ken Jenkins in 'Cougar Town' on ABCBill Lawrence may make fun of the fact that he employs a rotating set of actors on his shows. But watch 'Spin City,' 'Scrubs' or 'Cougar Town,' and you'll realize something: the reason why he keeps using the same actors is because he hires really, really good ones.

Take the case of Ken Jenkins. He spent nine years playing tough-as-nails hospital administrator Dr. Bob Kelso on 'Scrubs,' but there were always layers underneath the gruff exterior; you had a pretty good sense that he was an uncaring hard-ass only because it was his job to be that way. And, after Kelso was forced into retirement, you saw the man's gentler, regretful, more grandfatherly side come out.

So, when Lawrence cast Jenkins to play Jules' dad on 'Cougar Town,' I knew it would be a good choice. Yes, when he first came on screen as Chick, the word "Kelso!" flashed in my mind. But I quickly forgot about Jenkins' previous role and just enjoyed watching him have fun with the Cul-de-sac Crew and go through an emotional roller-coaster with Jules.

Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell in 'Modern Family' - 'Halloween' on ABC['Modern Family' - 'Halloween']

One of the keys to why 'Modern Family' has been able to continue the success it achieved in its first season is that the writers have taken care to round out most of the characters that finished last season with some rough edges. While the first season was the Phil, Manny and Cam show for the most part, this season we've found out more about Jay and Gloria, Mitchell, Luke, Alex and Haley.

But the person who's been rounded out the most has been Claire. And episodes like tonight's show why I never get tired of learning about her, and why she's been the show's breakout character this season.
