Starbucks customers can have a little news with their coffee now.  According to news.cnet.com, Starbucks is going to launched a "revamped Web hub, a landing page that's only accessible from its in-store Wi-Fi networks in the U.S. Teaming with the likes of Yahoo (the main technology partner), the Wall Street Journal, GOOD, the New York Times, iTunes, LinkedIn and Foursquare."  With this new site, Starbucks has local and mainstream news, free music downloads and local information, like weather, bike trails and movie trailers.

The new site will be called the Starbucks Digital Network, or the "digital version of the community corkboard," according to Adam Brotman, Senior Vice President of Digital Ventures.  However, Starbucks is not calling the network a "digital newspaper" but a "slick, iPad-optimized news and media site" that is designed to take the place of newspaper stacks that are usually next to the cash restaurant at the stores.

Interest in the digital newspaper is increasing: News Corp. constructed one along with interest "on behalf of other brands--not even necessarily news outlets--in seizing upon the mobile-reader craze to revive interest in reading what would otherwise be print content," states the article.  Plus, the Virgin Group is also coming out with a "Maverick" application for the iPad sometime in the near future.   

According to Gizmodo.com, newspapers retain hope that tablets and applications will help keep them afloat.  "The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today are building special tablet-y apps for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, hoping to easily port the app over to other Android tablets," reports the article.  Plus, the Wall Street Journal wants to put all of its information on the Blackberry PlayBook.

The Wall Street Journal also says that "in some cases, device makers are talking about advertising their devices in certain publications, in exchange for publishers agreeing to build an application for them."  This means that tablet makers need content and they are offering to pay publishers for their applications in an indirect manner.  In addition to this, publishers need the money because ad sales are down--this is why they are looking to tablets to bring them out of their rut. 

Hamburg: At the 17th World Editors Forum, Neil McIntosh, editor-in-chief of Europe.wsj.com discusses lesson learned about the value of engaging readers in social media and developing new editorial products uniquely tailored for his readers and digital consumers.

Microsoft will release the Windows Phone 7 soon, according to an article by MocoNews.net, which will be available to the public starting in November.  The phone was first unveiled eight months ago, and consumers have been waiting intently for its release.  The main "unveiling" of the phones will take place in New York, but the event will be telecast to a number of other locations.  "It will be essential for the hardware and software to look and feel as seamless as the iPhone," MocoNews adds.

Microsoft has gone to great lengths to "create a product that works more harmoniously, representing a huge shift in the way it does business," according to the article.  "Previously, it licensed software to OEMs, who were free to add their own creative touch to the look and feel of the OS."

The Financial Times has recently relaunched its weekend magazine with a new look and new content, it was reported today. While, according to the Guardian, Saturday editions have been growing and exceeding weekday circulation at most publications, the FT's weekend sales are thought to be weaker than those Monday to Friday.

The paper does not actually reveal precise figures for its weekend paper, which is published on Saturdays but remains in shops the following day, said the article.  But only 35 percent of readers who buy the Financial Times during the week buy the Saturday edition, said Caroline Daniel, the newly appointed editor of the Financial Time's weekend edition. 

"Daniel wants to increase sales by encouraging more of the paper's star writers to appear in the Saturday edition," said the Guardian, since she does not think there is enough "cross-marketing" between the two. She oversaw the relaunch.    

CEO Eric Schmidt in an interview with journal editors summarized Google's new aim: telling people what they want to do. "I actually think most people don't want Google to answer their questions," he said. "They want Google to tell them what they should be doing next." 

The Wall Street Journal plans to leverage its reputation in the United States for its technology coverage and will soon launch a new technology section for its European readers, Journalism.co.uk reported last week. The new section will cover technology business start-ups, entrepreneurs, gadgets and service activities in the tech business in Europe.

While the shape and structure of the upcoming tech section is still undecided, it will incorporate technology content from the United States edition and from the regional market as well, providing a mix of news and commentary that include "straightforward top quality reporting" supported by analysis on Heard on the Street and other blogs.

Foursquare, arguably the hottest, heavily-courted, high-tech startup since Twitter, has just inked (no pun intended) a deal with the most widely-read newspaper in the US, The Wall Street Journal.  A selection of WSJ.com articles (NYC restaurant reviews and other local cultural coverage) now include an "Add to Foursquare" button.  As TechCrunch astutely notes, "one surefire way to know that a service is doing well is when you see their buttons start appearing all over the web. We've seen it with Facebook, we've seen it with Twitter (Tweetmeme buttons), and now we're going to start seeing it with Foursquare".

As part of its effort to appeal to a wider New York audience, the Wall Street Journal will expand once again, this time by adding a new weekly lifestyle and leisure section, AdAge reported yesterday. The 15-17 page section is scheduled to debut this autumn, and is expected to run on Saturdays.

The move by the WSJ to reach more readers will also place it in direct weekend competition with The New York Times, which dominates on weekends and derives a significant part of its revenue from the advertising-loaded Sunday edition, DailyFinance.com reported. The Journal has already entered into a war with The Times on the local front, with its recently launched Metro section for New Yorkers, soon followed by an ad campaign directly aimed at its rival with slogans like, "Ahead of the times."

By now, it has become increasingly clear that 2010 is in fact, as the British weekly Economist put it, the year of the paywall. The Times of London and the Sunday Times are just weeks away from offering their online content for a fee and recently, the New York Times announced its finalized paywall plans and an official launch date.  

This has prompted Vanity Fair.com's and Newser's, Michael Wolff, to wonder what will happen to the news world when most people no longer get their sources from established sources.

Wolff shies away from the economics of paid online content's viability and delves deep into the transformations that a drop in readership might bring for newspapers behind paywalls.

The launch of the Wall Street Journal's New York Section has prompted the Guardian's Peter Preston to consider the future focus of national newspapers like the Journal.  If the Journal, once a solely-national paper, can move towards local coverage, is that the inevitable future for the rest of the large nationals in the industry?

He seems to think yes.  The WSJ's Greater New York launch wasn't a personal attack on the New York Times or Arthur Sulzberger; rather, it was a smart business move in changing times.

"In spite of all the hype and excitement, this isn't some wild News Corporation lurch into alien territory," writes Preston.  "It's competition as usual in an American newspaper world that seems to have forgotten what competition means."

In the media battle raging between The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal for New York City, the WSJ has the technological advantage. Writing for TechCrunch Erick Schonfeld reports that the Wall Street Journal is using the geo-based social networking service Foursquare to maximize their market penetration. 

As the Wall Street Journal plans to launch its new 10-page metro edition today, with the admitted purpose of competing directly with the New York Times, analysts everywhere are asking why.  

The Journal's metro launch will cost it $30 million over the next two years, and the paper is not particularly prized by locals for its New York city coverage.  But this move comes as an obvious extension of what has been an ongoing battle against the New York Times since Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. bought Dow Jones, the WSJ's parent company, in 2007.

Both publications have traded words, with the Times publishing an article written by media reporter David Carr that was critical of the Journal's perceived lean to the right under Murdoch.  In response, the Journal's managing editor Robert Thomson told New York magazine that one of the "personnel moves at the New York Times that...make(s) them vulnerable" was that "(Chairman of the board Arthur) Sulzberger remains in place."

For several months now the media industry has been captivated by The Wall Street Journal's decision to wage an all out media war against The New York Times' dominance in the New York City metropolitan area. As the clear underdog, industry insider's have relentlessly theorized over what strategies the WSJ will use against the NYT. In an article written for The Business Insider, Gillian Reagan uses new data to float her belief that women readers might be a deciding factor in the WSJ's battle for NYC.

Bloomberg is the latest news organization to attempt to take a bite out of the WSJ readership with a redesigned website. Bloomberg.com has ditched its old black and amber for a more traditional black text on a white screen look, reports Business Insider.

With its makeover, Bloomberg aims to position itself as the only financial news destination online. Its website's new layout combines Bloomberg's financial data, breaking news, commentary, with aggregated economic news stories from other sources. Media Bistro observes that the new layout and the colors make Bloomberg look more geared to average, everyday readers than financiers. Maybe Media Bistro is referring to the new layout's reliance of a vast array of images, rather than simply text and graphs, on its front page. 

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times are now locked in a good old fashioned newspaper war, one likely to cost both U.S. dailies modern day millions.

Yesterday, The Times gave its online business section a facelift to better compete with the WSJ's main offering, business news. Last week, word came out that both newspapers were offering discounts for ad prices, and prior to that the WSJ announced it would launch a New York edition in late April. The WSJ is also cutting its subscription prices by up to 80 percent in some cases as it aims to challenge The Times. Last month, the WSJ even used part of Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.'s face to illustrate a supposed facial feature on feminine men.

The New York Times has just given its Business Section online a facelift to make it look just like its own home page, a move that will allow it to compete with the Wall Street Journal's main offering, Ad Age reports.

The new homepage for the Business section highlights the importance of this sections with top-left and top-right "rabbit ears" and units that had been only for the paper's standard home page. It also includes a tab with automated latest news from the NYT and other news websites. Its remodeled business section is currently promoting itself on Bloomberg, USA Today, Yahoo, and MSN.

Ever since rumors of the launch of Apple's tablet computer started circulating across the Internet, opinions regarding the device have been divided. While some observers have not been optimistic as to what the iPad may mean for the future of media, some media pundits have gone so far as to call it the messiah of print media, hoping it will become a significant source of revenue for newspapers in the near future.

A new website discovered by The Guardian's Digital Content Blog, BreakthePaywall!, has arisen to counter the paywalls that news organisations are investigating to increase their revenue from online news. 

The Wall Street Journal is planning to wage war on the New York Times in what NYT journalist Richard Perez-Pena described as a "doozy." The war represents an effort by the WSJ to capture the affluent readers in the New York metropolitan area by providing local news on current events, culture, sports, and real-estate in its upcoming New York supplement. 

Although Facebook does send more traffic to News and Media sites than Google News, an analysis by Hitwise's Heather Hopkins reveals that these two sites send traffic to very different kinds of news websites. Facebook users seem to prefer broadcast media sites, while Google News sends its traffic over to newspaper websites.

Rupert Murdoch announced The Wall Street Journal's plans to launch a New York edition this April during a speech before the Real Estate Board of New York yesterday. Murdoch has reportedly set aside a $15 million budget for the new metro edition with the hopes of rivaling The New York Times in local news.

Murdoch, whose' News Corporation acquired the Journal in 2007 and also owns The New York Post, had not previously acknowledged public reports over the new section, one of the worst-kept secrets in the newspaper industry. His remarks mark the Journal's first foray into local news with a stand-alone daily section featuring articles on culture, sports, politics, and other news from New York.

An advertising downturn has put newspapers between a rock and a hard place, forcing many of them to take difficult decisions to stay afloat.

While some have said newspapers could learn a thing or two from the bottled water industry in getting people to pay by selling convenience, others have speculated that gadgets such as, e-readers and tablets, could revitalize newspaper sales in the same way iTunes and the iPod revived the music industry.

But an article from Forbes magazine offers yet another interesting analogy. This article likens the challenges that the newspaper industry is facing today to the one the airline industry has faced and dealt with: "getting customers used to paying for content and getting the industry used to charging for it."
