Spring is finally here and after a dark and gloomy winter, an array of new trends have emerged to brighten up the season ahead. We bring you the latest spring looks and show you how to dress on trend with johnlewis.com. So which trend will you be following this season?

Seventies Love Story

Seventies dressing ruled the runways back in September, when the spring/summer 2011 collections were first shown. Essential pieces include flared trousers, flowing maxi dresses and peasant blouses, not forgetting the mighty platform shoe. Embrace your Bohemian side with folksy dresses, paisley prints and a floppy, wide brimmed hat for a carefree daytime look.

These high-waisted indigo jeans by Hobbs' sister label NW3 (£79), are the perfect starting point for your Seventies look. The flared cut will flatter the figure and elongate the leg giving you a sexy and feminine silhouette.

The Seventies colour palette of chocolate brown, mustard yellow, and burnt ochre works brilliantly with dark denim, so wear your flares with a printed blouse like this one by Mango (£39.90). Finish the look with a pair of oversized Dior sunglasses (£150), a chunky Seventies cuff (John Lewis COLLECTION; £35) and a pair of leather platform wedges (Pied A Terre; £140).

When it comes to eveningwear, channel your inner disco-diva with a glamorous Studio 54 look. Inspiration can be found in the form of legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent and his love of jewel colours and luxuriously draped fabrics.

Try a stunning maxi dress like the Georgina jersey dress by Coast (£150) the vibrant peacock blue colour will ensure you stand out from the crowd and see you through to the early hours in chic seventies style.

Jewel tones look great with metallics, so wear your flowing maxi dress with a pair of statement platforms like these silver Lydia sandals (Terry de Havilland; £250). Terry de Havilland has made shoes for fashion icons across the world and can even name original Seventies icon Bianca Jagger among his clientele. These wedges are exclusive to John Lewis and can be delivered for free, so bag yourself a piece of fashion history now.

Colour Clash

Add an injection of colour to your summer wardrobe by wearing rainbow bright separates head-to-toe. Don't be afraid to clash and contrast bright colours for maximum impact, and remember, this look is guaranteed to make you feel fabulous from the inside out. Gucci, Issa and Versace all rocked hyper colours in their spring/summer 2011 collections, clashing electric blue with rich green and citrus yellow with eye-popping magenta.

The best way to approach colour blocking is to base your look around a bold cocktail dress, like the Giselle multi-strap blue dress by Reiss (169). The vivid colour is a great starting point and all that's left is to build the look with bright, clashing accessories. Wrap a purple patent belt around your waist, (Hobbs; £39) and slip on some bold heels in a sumptuous teal hue (Hobbs; £119). Lulu Guinness' statement lips clutch (£225) is a future classic in the making, bright and kitsch, it's the perfect addition to a colour clash look.

But if head-to-toe colour clashing is too much for you to handle, why not take a style tip from fashion designer Jil Sander and team a luxe white t-shirt (Gérard Darel; £90) with a bright, colour pop skirt , like this one by NW3 (£89). Or team this statement green Jaeger dress (£264) with a pair of patent nude heels (£175) and clash with a bold pink handbag (Coccinelle; £135) for a dramatic party look.

Flower Power

When the sun is shining, there's nothing more feminine to wear than a fresh, floral look. And the spring/summer 2011 catwalks were awash with botanical prints and all kinds of flora and fauna, from country garden prints at Erdem and D&G, to delicate organic prints at Alberta Ferretti.

The romantic in you with a penchant for Monet's water lilies should go for this Damsel in a Dress creation (£169), the painterly print in pastel shades is perfect for spring and paired with these coral heels (John Lewis; £80) you'll look and feel a million dollars.

For a daytime take on the trend, opt for a ditsy print floral dress like this one by iconic textile designer Celia Birtwell for John Lewis (£125). The lightweight fabric is perfect for the spring months and the retro print means it will last for seasons to come. Keep accessories simple, with this lily ring (London Road; £470), in rose gold, the metal of choice for 2011.

This pretty floral blouse (Cath Kidston; £55) is bang on trend for spring, with its pillar-box red peter pan colour and vintage print, it looks great with dark skinny jeans and ballet pumps. And the trend doesn't stop there, mix up your look with flower power accessories, in the form of a statement necklace (One Button; £20), a pretty rose bangle (Big Baby; £18) or an eye-popping floral clutch bag (Lulu Guinness; £295).

Urban Safari

The Urban Safari trend is easy to wear and casual during the hot and humid summer months, so keep cool and look fierce in tribal prints and utility detailing. Keep to a neutral colour palette of taupe, khaki and chestnut brown and introduce safari elements in the form of leopard, snakeskin and zebra prints.

For the girl about town who's on her feet all day, this BZR shirt dress (£99) is perfect, combining utility details with zip pockets and drawstring waist, it looks fabulous with a pair of woven gladiator sandals (Bertie; £75). Complete the look with an iconic Mulberry Bayswater bag with rose gold and champagne tiger print (£868).

Alternatively, work these skinny combat trousers (Joules; £69) with a nude utility-style shirt (Reiss; £110) for a relaxed city look. Dress the outfit up with these brown leather wedges by Carvela (£85) and inject some animal instinct into the look with this Fiorelli snakeskin handbag (£75).
