Dopludo Laptop Stand

This Dopludo Laptop Stand is a real beauty!

Belkin Timer

The Belkin Timer allows you to shut off power to whatever is plugged in after a set amount of time (1/2 hour, 3 hours and 6 hours).

The 50 Things Every Graphic Design Student Should Know

British designer Jamie Wieck from the studio Airside compiled this list of useful wisdom for design students about to enter the workforce.

Here are my favorites:

6. The path to work is easier than you think.
To get into the industry you need just three things: great work, energy and a nice personality. Many forget the last attribute.

13. Time is precious – get to the point.
Avoid profuse humour or gimmicks when contacting studios for work, they’ve seen it all before. Get to the point, they’ll be thankful.

15. Do as many internships as you can stand.
Internships are a financial burden, but they are vital. They let you scope out the industry and find the roles that suit you best.

16. Don’t waste your internship.
A studio’s work can dip, as can its energy. Ignore this and be indispensable, the onus is on you to find something that needs doing.

26. Network.
There’s some truth in ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’. Talk to people, send emails; at the very least sign up to Twitter.

47. Share your ideas.
You’ve nothing to gain from holding on to your ideas; they may feel precious, but the more you share, the more new ideas you’ll have.

50. Don’t take yourself too seriously.
Take your work seriously, take the business of your craft seriously, but don’t take yourself seriously. People who do are laughed at.

50 Things every graphic design student should know.

The Gigantic Inflatable Climbing Iceberg

I wish I had a lake outside my apartment so I could buy one of these Gigantic Inflatable Climbing Icebergs.

Table Tots

Our neighbor Jim down the hall makes fantastic furniture out of reclaimed bowling alley wood. The other day I walked by and saw this beauty of a kids booth called Table Tots. My little ones would get such a kick out of sitting at it. Another one of my favorites is this simple stool. Oh, and if you’re into cooking you’d love this massive Cutting Board.

Reversible

images by michaelsieber.com

Reversible is one of the latest inventions of Swiss Nicolas Staubli. Reversible consists of steel tubes and fabric than can be assembled into four different seats. By flipping over the rear legs, the chair transforms into a lounge chair and vice versa. The reversible cover, tensed and wrapped around the steel frame, offers two color variations that fit both positions. Brilliant? I think so!

That Sweet Spot

This graphic was from Ji Lee’s CreativeMornings talk last month. (It should be up any day now, I’ll make sure to post it) He was making a point of how personal projects feed into your professional life and vice versa. He was able to track what personal projects lead him to new professional opportunities. So, the two intersect in the end.

It made me chuckle and nod my head in agreement. Obviously I am a huge proponent and believer of the importance of side projects. (Hello there, TeuxDeux, CreativeMornings and Studiomates)

Concept Camera: The WVIL

The WVIL camera is a concept camera envisioned by Artefact’s award-winning design team. It answers the question: “what’s next for camera design?” The patent-pending WVIL system takes the connectivity and application platform capabilities of today’s smart phones and wirelessly connects them with interchangeable full SLR-quality optics. That’s How!

I am obviously a huge fan of Christoph Niemann. So it’s no surprise that I already pre-ordered his latest children’s book called That’s How!

Symmetry

Another fantastic video by Everynone in collaboration with WNYC | Radiolab. The ending gave me chills.

Online Kerning

Go to this url, click between two letters and use the A and S keys to kern. Fun.

Leggero Vento

I noticed quite a few of these stunning looking kids caddies called Vento, when I was in Switzerland last summer. Aren’t they just beautiful to look at? Given the big grins of little ones sitting in them, it seems as if they’re comfy to ride on. What I find particularly awesome is that it has a dual purpose: attach it to the bike or push it like a stroller.

I like it. What is it?

Breaking In

My studiomate William Burks Spencer recently finished a book about how to put together an advertising portfolio. In it, he interviews over 100 of the top people in the industry and asks them practical questions that a student or junior would have. You can check out his blog here or buy the book on Amazon.

Mixed Messages Mug

The Mixed Messages Mug sports its own do-it-yourself ransom note. Hijack a mug and make it say whatever you want!

(Dear Perpetual Kid, that watermark in the image is a little silly, no?)

Pangolin bag

The Pangolin bag is made of recycled inner tubes of trucks. Quite stunning.

The Line by Saul Steinberg

The Line, the original a 10-meter-long drawing with 29 panels that unfold, accordion fashion, is Steinberg’s manifesto about the conceptual possibilities of the line and the artist who gives them life. His drawing hand begins and ends the sequence, as the simple horizontal line that hand creates metamorphoses into, among other things, a water line, laundry line, railroad track, sidewalk, arithmetic division line, or table edge; near the end, the curlicues etched by the iceskater’s blade remind us of the role calligraphy plays in Steinberg’s art.

Animal Tail Magnets

I can’t help but think that these animals are checking out what’s in my fridge. Animal Tail Magnets.

Ghost Towel

Do you have little ones? In that case this Ghost Towel will most certainly make you smile.

Jessi Arrington’s Rainbow Parade

(Images by DumboNYC on Flickr)

Last saturday my studiomate Jessi pulled off an absolutely magical rainbow parade as part of a fleamarket-good-cause-sale-birthday-celebration called HoleSale. We’ll have a movie and more photos eventually, I just quickly wanted to share first impressions!

Hand-Drawn Icon Set

I posted the pixel perfect Helveticons earlier. Now, here’s something for those of you being more into hand-drawn icons.

(thank you spencer)
