Haddara relatives released on bail

By court reporter Peta Carlyon

Five members of a notorious Melbourne family accused of interfering with witnesses to a shooting have been released on bail.

The five men, including Haddara family patriarch, Ahmad Haddara, were arrested on Tuesday night at their homes in Melbourne's west.

Police charged them with harassment and interfering with witnesses to a shooting in Altona, in Melbourne's west, last June.

The victim in that shooting was also a member of the Haddara family.

Police have accused another cousin of pulling the trigger, thinking the victim was a member of the rival Chaouk family.

Police opposed bail, alleging the five arrested men have been trying to pressure the victim to change his statement.

But a magistrate ruled they should be released on strict conditions.

The men's lawyer has described the clan as "one big happy family."

They will return to court in August.
