Gears of War 3 Multiplayer Beta - Week 2 (Xbox 360)

This week the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta opened up to a new audience of pre-order customers, bringing with it two new maps and the return of King of the Hill mode. With just over two weeks until the end of the beta, we jumped back in to see what’s changed...

King of the Hill mode has been a staple of Gears of War multiplayer ever since the PC version of the first game. Now, in second week of the Gears 3 beta, it’s returned, and it’s even more tense and action-packed than ever. KoTH tasks both teams with holding a control point for as long as possible, with their score increasing by one point every second until either the COG or the Locusts hits the target score. To make things a little more interesting, after being held for a certain number of seconds, the “hill” will move to another location, allowing both teams to regroup, and avoiding lengthy stalemates around a single choke point.

Every second is vital in KoTH -- ceding control of the hill to the enemy, even for a second, can cost your team the game. As one side closes in on the target score, the countdown timer kicks in, making ever more dramatic noises as you inch closer to victory (or defeat).

The nature of King of Hill’s gameplay means that battles inevitably focus around one point on the map. This means that area denial weapons are particularly useful for flushing out an enemy team that’s camped in cover around the control point. If you’re finding that the traditional bullet, chainsaw and bayonet-based offerings aren’t quite cutting it, weapons like the Scorcher flamethrower, incendiary grenades and mortar are sure to ruin the day of a tightly-packed enemy team. If in doubt, anything that blows up is a decent bet.

All four of the beta maps are playable in King of the Hill mode, and all of them work pretty well. The control point jumps between a few different locations throughout the match, and spawn points have also been re-worked a little to accommodate the new game mode. The fact that most Gears 3 beta maps (and Gears of War maps in general) tend to be littered with cover anyway makes for a few natural control point locations in each level. Some points have access to powerful weaponry, but are overlooked or easily flanked. Others are well-protected, but require you to venture out from time to time to re-stock on ammo.
