    Graduate Fashion Week

    Graduate Fashion Week

This Graduate Fashion Week marked the end of an era for my old college, Central St Martins. This is the last year that the students were based at the famous hallowed halls of Charing Cross Road, where I witnessed many a miracle (most of them performed by Chris Kane incidentally). Last Tuesday night was the students’ final collections show and it was outstanding. These are my favourite designers of the bunch. I have picked these guys particularly because I feel like they really show what it means to be a Saint Martins graduate. The collections are mostly uncommercial and totally brilliantly imaginative. It is through allowing and pushing people to go as far as they possibly can and beyond that amazing talent seems to emerge from this magical place. And of course, the special tutors who I hope aren't going anywhere - apart from to their new swanky building down the road. Annabel Luton did gorgeous elegant prints. Crimson Rose O'Shea did a fabulously colourful collection and played with proportions really successfully.

Flaminia Saccucci's printed latex was stunning. Ivan Curia Nunes did gorgeous menswear, and I loved the accessories. Katie Jones incredible crochet blew me away. I loved Lucie Sutton’s collection, it felt contemporary, relevant and commercial. I thought Manami Sakurai's giant quilting was adorable and classic CSM off-its-head. Momo Wang's collection was bananas with amazing colours and multitudes of different prints all layered up together - this one really stood out. I loved Sheg Wei Wang's amazing knits and Steven Tai had amazing texture in his collection I look forward to many more amazingly inspiring young designers emerging from SaintMartins when it moves home.

    THE Wedding

    THE Wedding

Last Friday was possibly the most exciting day of the year for a lot of Brits and people around the world, as we all turned totally royalist to celebrate the magical union of Prince William to his long term love, Catherine Middleton. I must admit, I wasn't so sure what all the hype was about but as the day crept closer I realised that thanks to these two folks I was going to be getting a double Easter weekend off in succession! I also have a two-year-old daughter who is obsessed with everything princess, so as soon as she cottoned on to the fact that there was going to be a REAL princess getting married - the household turned into a hysterical frenzy of excitement.

In the week leading up to the ceremony I had dinner with the gorgeous Bay Garnett and after dinner we drove along Pall Mall as her partner Tom Craig was shooting a short film about it. It was amazing to see the devoted fans these guys had! People were sleeping on the streets just to catch a glimpse of them. On the wedding day I was at home in the Cotswolds and we went to watch the whole thing from early in the morning with our friends Dan and Juliet Chadwick. We had the most delicious full English royal brunch, fit for a king with delicious sausages and bacon supplied by Diana Guinness which she home reared and butchered herself. They were the best sausages I have ever eaten. That woman is a genius.

And then, there was the dress... And I caught a peek of Sarah Burton helping Kate in the car and jumped ten foot in the air with excitement that, indeed, it was going to be a McQueen dress. The relief I felt was enormous! I knew Sarah would not disappoint and I have to admit, I shed a small tear because I know Lee would have been so proud of her and all she has achieved for the brand after his sad departure.

The star of the show was undoubtedly, Kate Middleton. I cannot imagine the pressure she must have been under with two billion people watching her every move and she didn't falter one bit. She was so utterly poised and graceful and looked absolutely fit to be a queen. I genuinely believe that these two people love each other and I wish them all the love and luck in the world for a very happy and long life together.

Above is a picture of the first wedding dress I designed last September for my friend Jane Treay's wedding to her gorgeous husband, Charles Montenaro at Claridge's.

My very old friend, Philippa Holland, has just launched her amazing jewellery online with Net-A-Porter. Her work is heavily nature-inspired, with most of it being cast from real-life animal skulls and wings she finds on her daily ramblings through the enchanted Savernake Forest.

For her Œnature's Tricks collection, inspired by Darwin's specimens and intricate studies of nature, various insects and animal skeletons were gathered by Philippa. These were then electro-formed and cast in gold and silver to create an exact replica, a process inspired by Renaissance ceramicists. Selected pieces undergo further treatments of plating, oxidising and enamelling. Black diamonds and black pearls are prominent throughout the collection, highlighting particular features and bringing the forms to life.

She says Œnature's Tricks represents the darker side of nature, the predatory world of the insect and animal kingdom. Some of these creatures are deadly, yet masked by their delicate, seductive beauty. Other pieces from the collection are harmless, yet collectively feared. Creatures from the natural world have been used as adornment since the tribal world began and were believed to carry unique powers. These specific qualities were believed to be passed on to the wearer, offering protection on a spiritual level. All of the jewellery is manufactured in England, using a number of specialist craftsmen.

Visit www.philippaholland.co.uk or shop online at NET-A-PORTER.COM from April 25.
