Venice Biennale - Day Three - Giardini

Venice Biennale - Day Three - Giardini

The Korean pavilion was represented by Lee Yongbaek. The sculptures titled Pieta: Self-hatred were stunning, as well as photographs of soldiers masked with flowers. His work is a fantastic representation of contradictions of human existence.

I also liked the Venezuelan pavilion with the massive white sculptures from paper origami by Yoshi, titled Solaris, and modern pop art by Francisco Bassim.

In the general pavilion Llyn Faulkes and Sigmar Polke stood out from the rest. The constant queues prevented me from seeing British, German and Japanese pavilions, all of which were apparently great.

Today I visited the Arsenale. Amongst a selection of quite average and mainly uninspired art stood out only a few artists: Urs Fischer with his wax sculptures, museum of mafia in Italian pavillion titled L'arte non e cosa nostra, and UAE pavilion with the works by Lateefa Bint Maktoum. Her photographs portray a contrast between the object and its surroundings; often a covered Arabic woman in idyllic western nature or typically western animals in Arabic wasteland - a strangely poetic and other worldly mix, that poses a multitude of questions about society and its individuals.

Flavio Lucchini's exhibition titled What Women Want? was my favourite of the day. Exploring questions of what covering up with the burka brings to fashion, politics, consumerism, individual and society; it was a brilliant expression of not celebrity-related pop art.
