Supporting Multiculturalism

Over 50 of the Territory’s multicultural organisations are supported by the Territory Government each year. These organisations provide cultural events and support programs which promote community engagement and education, as well as celebration of our proudly multicultural society.

The Territory Government's commitment to assist migrant and ethnic Territorians develop the public’s cultural knowledge is demonstrated through a number of initiatives including the Multicultural Affairs Sponsorship Program (MASP).

In 2008–09 a total of $697,299 was provided to over 35 cultural organisations and associations under MASP including:

  • $ 8,900 to the Latino NT Association Inc.
  • $16,000 to the Cyprus Community of the NT
  • $12,000 to the Filipino-Australian Association of the NT Inc.
  • $32,000 to the Indian Cultural Society NT Inc.
  • $96,000 to the Multicultural Community Services of Central Australia (MCSCA) Inc.

The Territory Government assists with the renovations and upgrades of existing multicultural groups premises under the Ethnic Facilities Development Program (ECFDP).

The ECFDP 2008–09 funding totalled $1,351,500. Funding recipients included:

  • $100,000 Islamic Society of the NT
  • $180,000 Hindu Society of the NT Inc.
  • $181,000 Cyprus Community of the NT Inc.
  • $200,000 Thai Theravada Association.

Other Territory Government initiatives include Harmony Day Grants, the Charles See Kee Awards, Cultural & Linguistics Awards and other miscellaneous support.
