Athletes
Because athletes appear very healthy physically, people may assume that they must be healthy emotionally as well and rarely experience mental illness. Athletes themselves may feel that seeking help for mental or emotional problems may make them appear weak.
Athletes experience mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, as frequently as the general population. Athletes, particularly highly competitive athletes, may experience circumstances, pressures, and expectations that are very different from non-athletes.
