Judge Sues WTVF Investigative Reporter Over ‘Retaliatory’ Story

A Nashville judge is suing WTVF’s Phil Williams, alleging that the veteran investigative reporter conjured up a negative story about him after the judge failed to dismiss a parking ticket that Williams had received.

Judge Daniel B. Eisenstein is accusing WTVF of running “false and libelous” stories about him last year, including one that intimated that he was the target of an ethics investigation.

According to the lawsuit, Williams received two parking tickets one day in May 2010 while parked outside of police headquarters. Williams had parked in a media parking space and, when police later realized that he was there working on a story, a police captain wrote a letter to the Traffic Violation Bureau asking that one of the tickets be dismissed.

Eisenstein decided not to dismiss the ticket and Williams ended up paying both of them. Less than a month after Eisenstein’s decision, Williams produced an investigative report that floated the question of whether the judge was under an ethics investigation. Read more

After 40 Years, NJN Signs Off, Leaving 130 Jobless

The state-operated New Jersey Network becomes the latest victim of New Jersey budget cuts today. The network will officially go dark at midnight after 40 years, leaving its 130 employees without jobs.

The station has been locked in a losing battle about the future of the network since last year with Governor Chris Christie. After an effort to save the network was defeated this week in the state legislature, the station will become NJTV — a WNET-controlled station that will run 20 hours of New Jersey-based programming a week.

The Newark Star-Ledger‘s Christopher Baxter reports on the network’s final evening news, anchored by Jim Hooker and Michael Aron, yesterday evening:

The broadcast cut to a small room of empty cubicles. The lights turned off, and a small, blue NJN sign glowed on the back wall. The screen faded to black. “New Jersey Network. April 5, 1971 – June 30, 2011.

“Oh, baby,” Hooker said with a sigh, after the cameras turned off. “Tough one.”

Enquirer Releases Video of Chris Hansen’s Alleged Affair with WPTV Reporter

Calling it “blockbuster video footage,” the National Enquirer has released its undercover video of Chris Hansen and WPTV reporter Kristyn Caddell entering the Palm Beach Ritz-Carlton together.

Acting on word from sources that Hansen was cheating on his wife with the 30-year-old Caddell, the Enquirer set up a sting operation outside of the hotel to catch the “To Catch a Predator” star on hidden camera (video here).

According to the tabloid, Hansen and Caddell, who met at a local nightclub, dined at the Ritz-Carlton’s Angle restaurant before spending the night together at her apartment.

Calls and emails to Caddell have not been returned.

Now, It’s Official: Mike Francis Named Chief Meteorologist at WXIA

Okay, now it’s official: Mike Francis has been named chief meteorologist at Atlanta’s WXIA.

Earlier this month, KARK, Francis’s now-former station, jumped the gun in announcing that the veteran meteorologist had landed a job in the #8 market. In reality, Francis’s agent was still finalizing the WXIA deal. But now the Gannett-owned NBC-affiliate has announced that Francis is indeed joining the station.

“Mike Francis is one of the most well respected and knowledgeable meteorologists in the country,” said WXIA VP of News Ellen Crooke, in announcing the hiring. “He is such a perfect fit for us. His years of storm chasing have given him incredible insight into the way storms behave and I’m proud to have him lead our team.”

Francis, who spent the past decade at KARK, is replacing Paul Ossmann, who will be leaving WXIA later this month. Read more

Central Florida News 13 Catches Audience Member Flipping Off Prosecutor During Casey Anthony Trial

Matthew Bartlett has the most notorious middle finger in the country right now. On Thursday, Central Florida News 13 caught the 28-year-old TGI Friday’s server flippin’ the bird at Casey Anthony prosecutor Jeff Ashton and alerted Judge Belvin Perry.

Perry dragged Bartlett in front of the court and sentenced him to six days in jail and a fine of $400, plus $223 in court costs.

“This is just some stupid thing that I did,” Bartlett told Perry, unable to give a reason for why he flipped off the prosecutor. Video of the sentencing, which looks a lot like an episode of “Judge Judy,” inside… Read more

Raycom Taps C.J. Hoyt to Lead WTOL Newsroom

C.J. Hoyt, who has led the newsroom at Raycom Media’s WFIE since 2008, has been named news director of WTOL, Raycom’s CBS-affiliate in Toledo.

Hoyt is replacing longtime WTOL news director Andi Roman, who announced in May that she is stepping away from the news business to spend more time with her family. He is set to join the station on July 18th, shortly after WFIE begins broadcasting its newscasts in HD.

In announcing the move, WTOL general manager Bob Chirdon said that Hoyt helped lead WFIE back “to its historic position as the top-rated news provider in the market.” Chirdon expects him to pull a similar trick at WTOL and Hoyt says he’s for the challenge.

“When I see a challenge, where the foundation’s there and the people are there, it’s really just a matter of having a strong strategy,” Hoyt told the Toledo Blade about his new job. “I think it’s a challenge I can take on and succeed in.”

Joseph Denk Named VP-GM of WFRV-WJMN As Nexstar Deal Closes

Nexstar Broadcasting’s $20 million deal to purchase two CBS affiliates, WFRV in Green Bay and WJMN in Marquette, MI, was completed today. Joseph Denk will take over as vice president and general manager of both stations.

Nexstar announced the purchase of WFRV and WJMN in April. The deal brings the number of CBS affiliates that Nexstar owns up to 13. ““The acquisition of WFRV and WJMN brings immediate strategic and financial benefits to Nexstar as it expands and diversifies our station portfolio,” Nexstar president and CEO Perry Sook said.

Denk, who replaces veteran VP-GM Perry Kidder at WFRV-WJMN, is a Wisconsin native who is currently the VP-GM at WQRF, the Nexstar-owned Fox affiliate in Rockford, IL.

“Under Joe’s leadership, our Rockford operations have performed very well,” Nexstar executive vice president Tim Busch said. “His years of experience, respect within Nexstar and his Wisconsin roots are all a perfect fit to lead our newly acquired operations in Green Bay and Marquette.”

Self-Proclaimed Nerd Jonathan Oh Promoted to Daytime Meteorologist at WOLO

Jonathan Oh, a web producer and new media coordinator with WOLO, has been promoted to daytime meteorologist at the ABC-affiliate.

Oh, who worked as a reporter and meteorologist at crosstown rival WACH before joining WOLO, will work the station’s 6 a.m. and noon newscasts, which are set to be filmed in WOLO’s new street-level studio in downtown Columbia, SC.

“We’re delighted Jonathan will be on the air in Columbia doing weather again, this time with ABC Columbia,” said Chris Bailey, WOLO’s vice president and general manager, in announcing the move. “Jonathan is a great team player and very techno-savvy and will continue in his role as New Media Coordinator for our station.”

Oh, who describes himself as “fun, nerdy, techie” in his Twitter profile, is a media renaissance man. In addition to being a member of the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association, Oh has experience producing and anchoring live streaming news coverage for WOLO.
