Remembering Territory Families

The Northern Territory’s rich and diverse culture and history of tough, pioneering families has helped shape our unique international identity.

Our colourful history and the cultural and personal diversity of people who lived through it, is being recorded through the Government’s Remembering Territory Families initiative.

Much of this history has been built by the Territory’s large families and that history lives on today through their descendants.

This history has been built from Indigenous families, pioneering rural families, Chinese, Greek and Filipino families to name just a few.

Stories from such families all reflect something of the old Territory.

And it’s important for the whole of the Territory that the stories of these families be properly recorded and preserved.

The Northern Territory Library is under taking this compilation of the Territory’s biggest ever social history project.

The Territory Government’s commitment of $160 000 to this initiative will see major family groups record oral histories, memorabilia and photographs.

This material will be compiled as part of a touring exhibition to Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and Nhulunbuy.

With the families’ permission, these stories will also be incorporated as a permanent record at the Northern Territory Library, Darwin.
