    The Boone County 4-H Fair is set to open its seven-day run July 22, but first things first. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the 53rd 4-H Fair Queen Pageant will be held in the Witham Health Services Building at the fairgrounds, which is adjacent to I-65 at Lebanon exit 138.

    The Indiana Department of Transportation gift-wrapped a nearly five-mile stretch of Ind. 334 through Zionsville with new paving and, along with a cash payment of $155,000 to the town, turned over that portion of highway to the town's control.

      Steve Pittman always felt like he had some unfinished business on the tennis court. The former Carmel High School standout and University of Arizona tennis player had to stop playing tennis in his early 30s because of severe arthritis in both hips.

      The stained-glass windows now on exhibit in SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville combine history and art. The 25 windows of various dimensions were created by 13 artists from shards of glass collected by an Army chaplain in the mid-1940s from burned and bombed churches, chapels and synagogues in Europe during World War II.

      Soccer medals hang for Schmidt family

      The Schmidt family from Zionsville had a gold medal day on June 12. All four Schmidt children play for Carmel United Elite soccer teams and their four teams all were victorious in their age groups in the state championship games at Lawrence Park in Indianapolis.

      Immediate success

      The Zionsville High School baseball team made a significant climb in John Zangrilli's first season as coach. The Eagles went from 17-13-1, 8-9-1 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, to 22-6 overall and first in the HCC with a 15-3 record this season. The Eagles, who were upset by Fishers 7-6 in the sectional semifinals, were ranked No. 8 in the final Class 4A poll. The improvement helped Zangrilli earned The Indianapolis Star's All-North Coach of the Year honor.
