Civilization V PC Update & Hot Fixes Released
- 1 Comment
You know it's like that, and that's the way it is. Because it's like that, and that's the way it is.

  • Hot-Seat: Refresh resource icons for each player so that you cannot see another players resource icons above the fog. This also allowed you to see the location of a natural wonder discovered by another player as well. Both have been addressed with this fix.
  • Hot-Seat: Fix auto-save issue that was causing “Next Turn” hangs on re-load when players had no AI in the match.
  • Policies: Fix an issue that was causing policy finishers to count against the cost of the next policy (should be free).
  • UI: Map Options panel now works correctly for both multi-player and single player.
  • Modding: Fix problem that caused errors when starting WorldBuilder.
  • Modding: Fix problem causing WorldBuilder maps loaded as scenarios to always load the first leader slot instead of the selected leader.
  • Exploit: Close exploit that allowed a user to “sell” a free building for gold each turn without losing the building.
  • Multiplayer: Because of a hot-seat change, the chat window would end your turn every time a user hit “enter” after typing something in chat. This is now corrected.

John Carmack Eyes Mobile Phones, Says Streaming Has A Future
- 10 Comments
Over at the registration-only game industry news site GameIndustry.biz id Software's John Carmack dishes out some real talk on what's manipulating his game dev brain as of late. Essentially Carmack is finding himself surprised by the rapid advances in the mobile industry, and sees cell phones and tablets surpassing existing consoles in a couple years.
"it’s unquestionable that within a very short time, we’re going to have portable cell phones that are more powerful than the current-gen consoles," he told us. "People have exaggerated the relative powers - the iPad2 is not more powerful than the 360. It’s still a factor of a couple weaker. But the fact that it’s gotten that close that fast - that means that almost certainly, 2 years from now, there will be mobile devices more powerful than what we’re doing all these fabulous games on right now."
Carmack also gives his two cents on digital streaming services like OnLive. He doesn't give any assurances that the existing players will make it, but he definitely sees streaming being a part of the future.

"And convenience is a huge thing. I think that mobile is getting a lot of wins on convenience and I do think that streaming services like OnLive have a future. It’s not at all clear that the existing ones will survive long enough for that future to get there, but I think that it’s almost unquestionable that if you look 5, 10 years in the future, that that type of delivery - even though it’s not going to necessarily be the same graphical quality of latency quality, but a whole lot of convenience can make up for [what's lacking]."

Hell, has any game helped any guy pick-up women?

The Morning Juberish
What's up douchies?! Man oh man, summer is certainly here. It's been hot, hot, and hot. How could anyone actually enjoy this kind of heat? I think all of the heat-seekers out there are just faking it. They get on their bikes at the ass-crack of dawn, go jogging in the scorching sun, and this morning I even saw a woman happily strolling in a sundress like she was Mary F'n Poppins. Stop living this lie people! Just say no to summer! You summer biking and jogging dudes out there think that you're being all healthy and shit, but do you have any idea how bad ball sweat is for the environment? Totally catastrophic.

Apparently Ensaine was cruising the latest LOTR vids, so here are the fruits of his loins. Or the fruits of his looms. Or whatever that saying is.

The trolling video reminded me of this old KISS Shreds, can you dig it?

Finding Out More About Dishonored
Game Informer has the skinny on Dishonored, a new franchise from Arkane and Bethesda. So we've got Corvo a legendary bodyguard; skilled in the art of not being seen; also has supernatural powers, and unusual gadgets. If some of that sounds a tad familiar then it might be because Dishonored's co-creator is Harvey Smith, one of the developers responsible for Thief and Deus Ex. In an attempt to deliver a unique product, Dishonored will feature a "chaos system" which will track how much collateral damage you can cause, and change the game world as a result of your actions. You can read more about the chaos system and character skills at Game Informer.

Odd Pay Scheme For DUST 514
GamesIndustry.biz takes a look at the PSN "cover charge" for CCP's upcoming shooter, DUST 514. The EVE Online developer has stated that DUST 514 will require a cover charge from PlayStation 3 players. Oddly enough, the fee will be refunded to them as in-game currency. So here's how it's going to work...

Players will pre-purchase credits for something like $10-$20. This will allow them to enter the game. Once in the game you will receive the equivalent number of credits. This is called the "cover charge". The fee is to manage the initial launch of the game, which may go fully free-to-player further down the road. The goal is to grow a social network behind the game in a slow and manageable way; and apparently they feel this can be achieved via the cover charge scheme.

"We have always been a big believer in growing up a social network behind the game in a slow and predictable way. Because we have seen that if you don't do that you can end up with a very unstructured experience, where there's no cohesion to the community. By growing it at the beginning we help to make a healthy environment initially."
According to gi.biz, Sony also wants to try out various free-to-play business models on the PS3. At this time, CCP has not decided what they plan to sell via micro-transactions.

DUST 514 will be exclusive to the PS3, and the first console game to links players in real time with a massively multiplayer universe on the PC. Set in the EVE Online universe, DUST 514 players will have a profound effect on PC players in EVE Online. For example, EVE's pilots can form alliances with DUST 514 mercs to engage in firefights and conquer territories on the planets of New Eden, which are common to both games. The actions of ground troops and orbiting attack fleets are tightly interwoven, with the real time actions of players in one game directly affecting the other. A single bullet fired on the planet below can pivot the balance of power in EVE Online. Every action has consequences, and every reaction has the potential to topple empires.

SOE has announced the first Downloadable Content (DLC) pack for DC Universe Online. "Fight for the Light." introduces DCUO's seventh power set -- light, and brings on The Green Lantern. The new downloadable content will be available this summer for both PC and PS3.

Mini Robot Wars Released
Have you been drawn into the revitalized "tower defense" genre lately? Looking for a cute, yet deadly little diversions? Then give Mini Robot Wars from Picsoft Studio a tumble as it hits the scene with cute characters and intense gameplay, and all for $9.99 USD. The PC only title is the first big, international release for Picsoft Studio and you can find the game for download right now via digital distribution sites like Big Fish Games, GameHouse and Impulse. Below you'll see a batch of pics, some info and of course the full Press Release at the Read More.

In Mini Robot Wars, the aim is to help the cute little alien robots defend their planet against an invading horde of evil machines, seeking to turn it into a space resort. The player must gather resources and build robots to act as defensive units and fight their enemies. The game features simple gameplay while retaining plenty of depth, with a large number of units, upgrades and unlockables and a variety of mini-games.

Mini Robot Wars has a unique gameplay mechanic; instead of the typical 'path system' adopted by most tower defense games, it uses a platform-like approach common in side-scrolling shooter games. The enemy’s movement is thus not defined by a path but rather by its type.

Good morning VE! I'm back from my impromptu vacation and I'm feeling great. I was without Internet for a few days on purpose so I've got some catching up to do on where we are in news, but I should be back on top today. What did you all do on your weekend, and what games have been taking up your time? I was doing this great fishing game where you get in a real boat, with real fishing equipment, and try to catch real fish. It was amazing and I've never seen graphics so real in a sports simulation. GG nature, it was a 10 out of 10!
