Learning Objectives

MCEN 4045 - ME Design Project I

MCEN 4085 - ME Design Project II

  1. Ability to formulate design problems
    • Formulate a concise problem definition statement for an open-ended design problem
    • Develop quantitative design requirements
    • Apply Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) to translate customer desires into engineering design requirements
  1. Apply engineering design skills
    • Generate alternative design concepts that can potentially satisfy the design requirements
    • Perform the necessary engineering analysis to make engineering decisions in a methodical way
    • Set up and perform experiments to help make decisions
    • Create CADきゃど models and drawings of physical prototypes
    • Fabricate and test physical prototypes
  1. Demonstrate project management skills
    • Be able to function in a team environment
    • Present professional oral presentations, including preliminary and critical design reviews, final presentations
    • Write professional written reports, including technical manuals
    • Plan and manage a design project, including time management and financial budgets

Catalog Descriptions:

MCEN 4045-3, Mechanical Engineering Design Project I. First part of a two-course capstone design experience in mechanical engineering. Problem definition; determining design requirements; alternative design concepts; engineering analysis; proof-of-concept prototype; CADきゃど drawings. Students make several oral design reviews, a final design presentation, and prepare a written report. Prereqs., MCEN 3025 and 4026.

MCEN 4085-4, Mechanical Engineering Design Project II. Second part of a two-course capstone design experience in mechanical engineering. Refinement of prototype; design optimization; fabrication; testing and evaluation. Students orally present the final design, prepare a written report and operation manual for the product. Prereq., MCEN 4045.
