Plastic Bag Ban

Plastic Bags Banned From 1 September
A four month phase-out period to the plastic bag ban commences on 1 May 2011.

Territorians use approximately 40 million bags each year. This ban will benefit the environment. 

From 1 September 2011 Territory retailers can no longer supply lightweight, “checkout” style plastic bags, including degradable bags.

So start the change now. There are a range of environmentally friendly bags as alternatives, such as green bags, biodegradable bags, paper bags and heavier boutique bags.

Cash for Containers Legislation Passed in Parliament

The Territory Government’s Cash for Containers scheme will reduce litter, increase recycling and help reduce the amount of waste going to the Territory’s landfill by up to 50% .

The Environmental Protection (Beverage Containers and Plastic Bags) Bill 2010 was passed by the Legislative Assembly in February 2011. Legislation will be in place in the coming weeks.

Cash for Containers will benefit Territorians with 10 cents back in their pocket for each container collected.
