The death of David Cairns was announced today.

The Labour MP for Inverclyde was 44 years old. He was also a thoroughly decent man, damn good company and the sort of person who came dangerously close to giving politicians a good name. I have no hesitation in saying that Parliament is a poorer place today.

The last word here should go to his friend and colleague Tom Harris, who has written this excellent appreciation of an excellent man.
