At PMQs, Gordon Brown and David Cameron talk road tax

Full coverage of UK politics
PMQs is not exactly high-octane stuff so far, with Gordon Brown and David Cameron sinking deep into the minutiae of the Treasury's road-tax plans. But in the stat-fest, we are seeing a new Tory tactic emerging.   Mr Cameron is clearly trying to take on the PM on the details, (something Fraser Nelson does regularly does with with near-forensic glee) in order to chip away at the very foundations of the Brown reputation personal credibility and solidity.  "Dodgy statistics," says Mr Cameron, suggesting that Trading Standards would clamp the PM in irons were he a market-trader.  Mr Brown meanwhile hits back by comparing the Tory leader to a used-car salesman, a jibe straight out of the No 10 polling book.

It may not be too exciting, but we'll hear a lot more of this between now and 2010 — the battle for credibility is the battle for the general election.
