Our flexi-hours PM and the school run

Can somebody please tell me why the PM and his deputy are taking time out from running the country to take their kids to school in the mornings?

According to Nick Clegg, it is really “lucky” that both he and David Cameron are such modern fathers that they delay the start of cabinet each day so they can do the school run. This, he explains, is the “new politics”.

I wish I could see the appeal of this new man, new politics era but it just leaves me utterly baffled.

The Prime Minister’s wife Samantha has announced that she is scaling back at work to allow her to support her husband. I assume that they, and the Cleggs, have help from nannies as well.

So why are both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister unavailable for running the country for an hour each morning because they are dropping their children at school?

Perhaps they are trying to set an example to the rest of us, that children need fathers who spend time with them at a dedicated time each day.

Well, ok. The hands-on fathers of this country will appreciate that vote of confidence. But there is another type of man who keeps this nation running like clockwork. He’s called the hands-off father, and generations of children have been doing very well under the aegis of his lofty parenting skills for hundreds of years now.

The hands-off father – I’m guessing Churchill was one – turns up at work on time every day, be it in the factory, the City, or Downing Street, and doesn’t expect his colleagues to cover for him while he is bonding with his offspring. I reckon he deserves our respect too.
