The compact nature of the Territory’s Government is its strength. It is efficient, integrated, and the decision makers are readily accessible to potential business investors and partners. The Territory Government prides itself in being approachable and being aware of the needs and concerns of the business community. Like the people, the government is “can do”.

The Government is stimulating local business by significantly cutting tax, spending record amounts on infrastructure, improving procurement processes and building a skilled workforce. The reduction in taxes makes the Territory one of the most competitive business environments in Australia. The 2007-08 Northern Territory Budget has resulted in another rise in the stamp duty tax-free threshold to $350,000 and its removal from hiring transactions. Business confidence is high and the Territory’s economic growth rate continues to outstrip the rest of Australia.

On 1st July 2006 the payroll tax free threshold for business was raised to $1.25 million, making the Territory the lowest taxing jurisdiction for small business in Australia. Duty payable on the granting and renewal of leases and franchises, and duty on unquoted marketable securities was also abolished from 1 July 2006.

Through the Department of Business and Employment (DBE) the Government offers a free and confidential business information service to new and existing businesses. Business owners and those wishing to get started in business can access a wide range of information by talking to the Department's Client Managers. DBE also runs a number of business and trade support schemes.
