Sept. 19--This just in: Thousands of TV viewers are cutting the cable or shelving the dish. A recent story in USA Today says America's biggest cable company, Comcast, lost 238,000 subscribers in the second quarter of this year while Time Warner Cable, the No. 2, lost 130,000. Folks who rely on satellites to keep them entertained are canceling out, too.

Sept. 19--Fledgling small businesses used to be job generators, but that has changed in the past decade and especially since the Great Recession. Many entrepreneurs are like Amy Wische of Boynton Beach. And they're like David Evans, 37, who employed 17 people at the Pastry Parlor in Lantana, which closed last year, a victim of the economy after he spent seven years as a wholesale baker.

Sept. 19--With the door now open for a strike, and management and the labor unions at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons preparing for another potential work stoppage, one thing is clear: The true winners would be competing grocery stores. Since the last strike and lockout in 2003-04, which lasted 141 days, the three big grocers have hemorrhaged market share.
