For most residents of Aspinwall, it takes mere
minutes to walk to the central district. The 150-plus businesses
include a grocery store (that delivers!), great restaurants, an independent
coffee shop, town park and much more. Dining options include the upscale Luma as well as casual spots, including a deli.
Aspinwall remains the
refuge its founders originally intended. The town was founded in 1892
when the Aspinwall family, then of New York state, started selling off
lots with the intent of creating a refuge from the (then)
industrialization of Pittsburgh.
And while the borough offers
apartment living, the city is marching firmly toward establishing
itself as a harbor for young families who are renovating the
turn-of-the-century architecture homes.
Still, despite the
robust commerce within and around the borough (It is bordered by the
Waterworks Mall and UPMC-St. Margaret Hospital) the borough offers
quiet well-kept, tree-lined streets lined with houses steeped in
turn-of-the-century architecture.
Residents take pride in their
homes here. As one says, "to walk down a street is not so dissimilar
from walking through a garden."
Several Port Authority bus routes run along Freeport Road. The 1 Freeport Road route operates between Tarentum/New Kensington and Downtown Pittsburgh. The 91 Butler Street bus features service to Lawrenceville, The Strip and Downtown. For service to Oakland, riders can take the 71B Highland Park, which also serves East Liberty, the shops and restaurants of S. Highland Avenue and Downtown. All these routes also offer access to Waterworks Mall.
