The best way to take good wildlife photographs is to have the right gear. Digital SLRs with a lens focal length of 300 to 400mm are recommended, but you can get away with a decent compact with a 10x zoom. Different trips will require different equipment – for a trip to the Galapagos where animals come close up (such as this sea lion), a compact digital will do the job. But a great image of a fast-moving rainforest orangutan might require a faster machine. (John Freeman/LPI)
