Greece could be singing in the bath

Norman Lamont was said to have been singing with happiness in his bath the day Britain fell out of the ERM. Is it possible the same thing might happen if Greece drops out of the euro?
They go back to the drachma which falls to half its euro equivalent. The world flocks to Greece for its [...]

Fun – what the weekend was made for

I’ve no truck with a January full of guilt – go out and have fun instead. And as long as there’s blue stuff under your keel, you can pretty much go wherever you choose. Be a flaneur of the sea – paint a route determined by wind, wave and your own free will.

Canterbury: Music is changing in a really big way

In the current musical climate, finding a band that can truthfully say they’ve done everything themselves is a real delicacy. In an age where we’re surrounded by mp3’s, wav’s, and endless streams of Bandcamps and Tumblrs we can only hope to find a diamond in the rough. For me, that diamond is the ‘sweet rock’ [...]

Why always Ronaldo?

If one player in La Liga could unveil Balotelli’s famous ‘Why Always Me?’ t-shirt this weekend, it may well be Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

To return to Ed Miliband’s worst PMQs ever

The exchanges between Miliband and Cameron over the rail fares increase have been scored by some as a draw. At the time, in the chamber it looked anything but. There may have been inaccuracies on both sides but Ed Miliband’s questioning went wrong immediately, he failed to press home his point, he flailed, his own side despaired. Whatever Lord Adonis says his intentions were, they are not relevant to the phrasing and failure of Ed Miliband’s attack.

Thatcher: Blair in drag?

I have not reported on luvviedom’s Blair Hate Fest much recently, as the loopiness is abating. But Phyllida Lloyd, the director of The Iron Lady, provides a prize exhibit in the latest Attitude magazine. She says that Margaret Thatcher is “much more hated than Tony Blair, who caused the deaths of millions. Deaths!”
Previously in this [...]

Beer: The flavour of New Zealand

What’s small, green, comes from New Zealand and is incredibly popular with Britain’s brewers? No, not Kiwi fruits, although someone will surely make a beer with them sooner or later. The answer, of course, is hops, and the Nelson Sauvin variety in particular. It may sound like a Central American midfielder for a middling Premier [...]
