Gibraltar rocks the world of chess with a quarter of a billion website hits

Overall winner Nigel Short, winner of the top women’s prize Hou Yifan, with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia, and organiser Brian Callaghan.

Tradewise 2012 has rocked the world of chess and made history this week. Hou Yifan from China at 17 years of age played the best result by a female player in the history of the game. The world of chess will be talking about her achievements in this tournament for many years to come – she not only beat, up till now the best woman in the world, Judit Polgar, but four top players way above her own rating. The final round was thrilling as everyone waited to see if GM Nigel Short, who by his own admission plays his best chess on the Rock, would make it an awe-inspiring finish – as he played against Hou Yifan in the play-off. And he was victorious just after an hour and five minutes regaining the title he first won in 2003. At the official gala dinner Chief Minister Fabian Picardo presented the figure for the official website hits over the 10 days, a staggering quarter of a billion hits – this statistic he said best illustrated the huge success of chess in Gibraltar.

Duke of Cambridge at the controls of a Sea King helicopter as the Ministry of Defence have said that Prince William has arrived in the Falklands for a tour duty as an RAF search and rescue pilot.

The Duke of Cambridge has arrived in the Falklands amid simmering tensions between Britain and Argentina over the disputed islands.
His arrival, ahead of a tour of duty as an RAF search and rescue pilot, comes as the Royal Navy prepares to send one of its most advanced new warships to the area.

A Worcestershire man is to run 156 miles in the Sahara Desert this April with an ironing board on his back to raise money for a local hospice.
Paul Roberts, from Ockeridge, near Worcester, is set to take part in the Marathon Des Sables in April, which is a six-day ultramarathon in temperatures of 50C in Morocco, to raise funds for St Richards Hospice in Worcester.
The 45-year-old believes he is the first person to attempt the trek, considered to be the toughest foot race on the planet, with an ironing board and iron strapped to his already bulging back pack.

BHS HOME opened on Friday at 181 Main Street. The store is on 2 levels and has doubled its square footage from the previous site in the ICC.

Cyclists set off on the ‘Rock to clock’ challenge

CYCLING TO BIG BEN Captain Ed Plunkett and Rob Kendall are cycling to Big Ben for charity.

Captain Ed Plunkett and his future brother-in-law, Rob Kendall, set off on Friday morning to ride to the Houses of Parliament, London in their self-styled ‘Rock to Clock Challenge.’ They have allowed themselves thirty-two days for the 1,800 mile route up through Spain and France and aim to average about 60 miles a day with a rest day every five days or so. Similarly, they aim to camp out most nights with an occasional stop in a hostel – if only for a well-earned shower.

Police yesterday confirmed that a local man, 35, was found dead a Vineyards estate. A Coroner’s inquest is under way. The Chronicle understands that the tragic incident is believed to have been a suicide but is pending a post morem.

Rock faces challenge to gaming industry from UK – Chief Minister

SMALL BUT STRONG Chief Minister formally opening the ESBA conference yesterday.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has signalled a major battle ahead for Gibraltar with London over its plans to introduce gaming transaction taxation in UK on online gaming provided from abroad including the Rock. In effect London is taking a protectionist stance and wants to take a cut of from profits of companies that fled the UK over high taxation there.
It is thought the plan is to require licensing for major companies if they are providing online gaming into Britain even if based on the Rock.
“There are issues on the horizon for Gibraltar. Those issues affect businesses in Gibraltar, and it is not always the usual common enemy that is responsible,” Mr Picardo said.
