SOCIAL media is at the centre of a new government-backed campaign to stamp out homophobia in Victoria’s schools.

The Stand Out! campaign will be launched today by government group the Safe Schools Coalition, will use online resources to share stories of how students have dealt with homophobia.

Coordinator of Safe Schools Coalition Victoria Roz Ward said young people can play an important role as positive role models.

“There are young people across Victoria who are making a real difference by challenging homophobia in their schools.

“This resource brings together some of those stories and advice so other students can do the same,” Ms Ward said.

Online videos and social media, as well as information booklets, are some of the resources to be given to high schools across the state.

The campaign follows research from La Trobe University that shows 75 per cent of same-sex attracted young people have experienced some form of homophobic abuse.

Verbal abuse has been encountered by 61 per cent of those bullied, while 18 per cent have experienced physical homophobic abuse.

Around 80 per cent of these homophobic incidents take place in schools, making it the least safe place for these young people to be.

Education Minister Martin Dixon said the Safe Schools Coalition would help schools explore the impact of homophobia on young people.

“It’s an important step in ensuring school communities have the resources and confidence to challenge homophobia and respect diversity,” Mr Dixon said.

Some of the online resources and further information on the Stand Out! campaign can be found on the Safe School Coalition website.

It's a bit hard to concentrate on your maths and english when your been abused for what you do in the privacy of your bedroom. This looks like a great program, respect!

This is wonderful to see. Had campaigns like this existed when I was in high school (only 6 years ago), it might have saved me and my family alot of heartache from the effects of homophobic bullying. All students have the right to feel safe in their schools. Congratulations to the students involved.

School tuition time is precious and should not be stolen from our children by the politically correct. Maths, English, Arts, Sciences. That's why children go to school. Schools should be allowed to concentrate on these important things and not have tuition time diverted in whatever campaign is the politically correct flavour-of-the-month. I want my children to be literate and numerate. It is not a high priority in our house for our children to go to school so that they can learn lots about what some people do in the privacy of their bedroom.

Please, no one cares who you make love with. Why do you care what other people say anyway?

Why does sexuality have to be something that needs to be "proclaimed" every single time? Straight or not, no one CARES.

The more you act like it matters, the more of what you don't want to happen, will happen.

This sexuality thing is becoming more and more like some sort of "exclusive" club that people have to "proclaim", which seems "rebellious" because no one else is proclaiming their sexuality.

You like boys, girls, or even furniture.

NO. SENSIBLE. PERSON. CARES.

With school yard and cyber bullying, this will be a hard sell to immature, empathy void kids and young adults.........but good luck with the program and I would include educating parents in this program too.
