A scientific framework for understanding progress in developing nations is needed to enhance global efforts to improve economic, social, health and other aspects of life. Historically, economic interventions such as those conducted by the World Bank have been unsuccessful at achieving their goals. The inherent interdependencies within societies present challenges to traditional planning. A complex systems approach offers insights into pattern formation and evolutionary dynamics that can overcome these obstacles.
