Surveillance, Response & Management

New Zealand has strict border controls designed to stop pests and diseases coming in.

But the biosecurity system is much more than just border controls - it involves multiple layers of protection including government agencies, local councils, industry and community groups.  A number of new initiatives have been implemented to boost biosecurity readiness and response.  See New Post Border Initiatives and Government Industry Agreements for additional information.

The Ministry for Primary Industries holds responsibility for leading and co-ordinating these groups in the fight against unwanted pests and diseases – including those already established here.

Our Surveillance teams are constantly on the lookout for recent breaches of our borders.

Response staff are ready to swing into action once a new threat has been spotted and to determine initial plans for action.

The Pest Management group looks after longer term programmes for controlling and eradicating established pests and diseases.

New Zealanders also play a key role in helping keep a sharp look out for unwanted new arrivals.
