Bartow Softball Drops to No. 48 in ESPN Ranking

Bartow dropped to No. 48 in the nation on ESPN’s Fab 50 rankings after losing its first game of the season last week to George Jenkins. The Yellow Jackets, who placed fifth in their own Bartow Home of Champions Tournament this past Saturday, were ranked No. 19 before the loss by ESPN, third by MaxPreps. They dropped to 42nd on the latter.

FHSAA Seeking Regional Swimming & Diving Hosts for 2012-13

Straight from the FHSAA website: The Florida High School Athletic Association is currently making plans for the 2012-13 school year. Accordingly, we are interest in establishing the host schools and sites for the 2012 FHSAA regional swimming & diving meets. Please download the document at this site if interested. The deadline to apply to host is Thursday, May 31, 2012.  

4 Kathleen Sprinters Top the State in Their Class

Four Kathleen sprinters have the fastest times in the state in the 55-meter dash and the 55-meter hurdles according to flrunners.com.  Sophomore Aaliyah Edmond ran a 8.08 at the Lake Mary Rams All-Comers Meet in early February and Phylacia Grant, also a sophomore, was timed at 10.73 in the 55-meter hurdles in the same meet. FACA All-Star Basketball Game in Fort Pierce Saturday

Five Polk County basketball players will compete in the FACA North-South All-Star game taking place at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce today. Haines City’s LaDerricka Spillman and Briona Brown will play in the Girls’ All-Star game at 11 a.m. LaDreda Akins, the Hornets’ coach, is also the assistant coach for the contest. Lake Wales’ Basketball Finishes Season Ranked 29th in Nation

Lake Wales beat Terry Parker pretty handily a couple of Saturdays ago for the Class 5A boys’ basketball state title, earning the team the No. 29 spot in the nation according to ESPN.  The Highlanders, who won 66-30 in a game that went to a running clock in the fourth quarter, also finished 25th in the nation on Max Preps’ polls. 

Lake Gibson’s Kennard Swanson Picks Up Offer From Missouri

Lake Gibson defensive lineman Kennard Swanson picked up an offer from the University of Missouri on Tuesday, defensive line coach Robert Whitaker told The Ledger. Swanson, who played at both defensive tackle and defensive end for the Braves, had 11 sacks and 46 tackles in eight games last year. The 6-foot-1, 265 lb. up-and-coming senior already has offers from the University of Southern California and Mississippi.
