Freedom of Information

Everyone has the right to request information held by public sector organisations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Along with this Act, two other pieces of legislation govern people's right to access public sector information:

  • The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 give you the right to obtain information about the environment held by public authorities
  • The Data Protection Act 1998 protects your personal information and makes sure it isn't misused. It gives you the right, in most cases, to find out what information is held about you

In this section you can learn how to request information that the Department for Communities and Local Government holds.

Note: For the purposes of the above legislation, the Department's Executive Agencies and the Government Offices (GOs) for the Regions are considered part of the Department. They have no separate legal identity and are not public authorities in their own right. However, requests for information held by the agencies and GOs should be made to those part of the organisation.
