Search help

For a simple search just type the words you are looking for in the Keywords box and click the 'Search' button. In general, every word you enter will be used in the search, though there are a few exceptions to this. Words that are commonly used, like 'the,' 'a,' and 'for,' are usually ignored.

By putting double quotes around a set of words, you can tell the search to consider the exact words in that exact order without any change.

You can also include more advanced search options, as described below:

Exclude keywords

If your search term has more than one meaning, you can focus your search by excluding words related to the meaning you want to avoid. To do this, enter the words to avoid in the Exclude keywords box.

Content types

Pages on the Department for Communities and Local Government websites have been categorised into a number of different content types. By default searches will return all content types. To limit the search to a smaller set of content types, or an individual content type, unselect the 'All content types' option and then select the content types to search from the list.

Date range

To restrict the date range for the results to be returned, please choose a start and end date by selecting the day, month and year from the pop-up lists. Please note, the chosen start date must not be after the chosen end date, or no results will be returned, and an error message will be displayed.

Sites

The default search will find content on any of a number of Department for Communities and Local Government web sites. To limit the search to a smaller set of sites, or an individual site, unselect the 'All sites' option and then select the sites to search from the list.

Results per page

To change the number of search results displayed on each page, select one of the options from the pop-up list.

Sort results

By default search results will be sorted, so that those most relevant to the search keywords are displayed first. You can choose to display the most recent, relevant results first, by selecting 'By date added' from the pop-up list.
