Torah Study

"The study of Torah leads to all mitzvot."

At Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, Torah study is at the heart of what we do. Because of a number of our remarkably knowledgeable congregants and our founding principal of Freedom of the Pew, our Torah Study Group is led by our own long standing member, Ken Gordon.

Torah Study Group meets each Shabbat at the synagogue for two hours beginning at 9:00 am. The group is lay-led and knowledge of Hebrew is not required.

At most sessions, the group devotes approximately half its time to studying the Torah portion of the week. The other half of the session is devoted to studying the other books of the Tanach. In this endeavor, the Group is currently studying the Psalms, the Book of Job, and the Twelve "Minor" prophets (e.g., Amos, Jonah, Micah, etc.).

The Group's meetings are discussions, not lectures. Newcomers and non-members are welcome. Since different texts are discussed each week, attendance at prior sessions is not a prerequisite.

For those who want to prepare in advance, emails are sent each week indicating which verses will be covered, and outlines of the non-Torah materials to be discussed are available. You can request this information by contacting Ken Gordon.
