ARSENAL LADIES

The FA Women's Super League

Women's Super League

Over the last ten years, the Women's game across England has seen unprecedented growth on the International and Domestic front but in order to allow this growth to continue, something had to change within the structure at the top of the Domestic League. Therefore last year, the FA invited all clubs and organisations to enter a rigorous application process to become part of a brand new league called the FA Women's Super League. This process included clubs having to meet set criteria on a range of areas such as marketing, commercial activities, medical provision, facilities and so on.

It is intended that this brand new league will be competitive, sustainable and commercially attractive with eight teams competing from April to September (with a summer break this year due to the Women's World Cup). The eight successful teams who will enter this league are Arsenal Ladies, Bristol Academy, Birmingham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Doncaster Belles, Everton and Lincoln. ESPN are the confirmed broadcasters and have agreed to show five live games in the first season with numerous hi-light 'match of the day' type shows.

Having finished playing in the FA Women's Premier League last May, Arsenal Ladies would not play any League football for eleven months until their first FA WSL match due to be played on Thursday 14th April where they will face Chelsea (away). The first Home match (which will be played at Borehamwood FC) will be against Bristol Academy on Thursday 21st April, 7.45pm kick off.

Arsenal Ladies will still compete in the FA Cup, which they will enter in March and of course, they have the Women's Champion's League Quarter Final home and away legs also to be played in March. There is added importance with the FA Cup this year because the two FA Cup Finalists will enter the Women's Champion's League for next season (2011/12) because the FA WSL Champions and runners up will not be decided until September which is after the UEFA deadline for Champion's League entries.

As we draw closer to the opening game, you will find further information on tickets and fixtures on this website.
