EXCLUSIVE: First, it started out as an Alien Prequel. But then it morphed into something “more original”, an insider tells us – even though Hollywood kept referring to the project as “The Alien Prequel” right up until today when Twentieth Century Fox officially announced the new Ridley Scott production as Prometheus is now bound for worldwide release on March 9th, 2012. Returning to science fiction filmmaking for the first time since Blade Runner, Scott will direct this epic. Of the five major roles to be cast, Noomi Rapace is the first actor signed to star (as “Elizabeth Shaw”), and we hear that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female lead (“Vickers”).
The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Ridley’s idea. Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version which has expanded the story into new directions. We hear they were instructed to “go off and come up with what they want” using the ‘Alien DNA’. Though story details are being closely guarded, Ridley explained the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows: “While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”
Says Lindelof: “In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.”
Swedish actress Noomi Rapace landed the scientist’s role after Scott saw her portrayal of fictional Lisbeth Salander in the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well as the rest of the Steig Larssen. All Fox would say is that the other roles “would be cast soon”.
OMG!!!!!!!!! I could not be more excited than I am right now. ALIEN is my favorite movie of all time and with such incredible talent attached, this is easily the the movie I’m most looking forward to seeing over the next couple years.
A good anthropological approach (alien culture/human culture), mythology mixed with a visionary cyberpunk stylization should create an original movie. Also the choice of a swedish actress sounds good.
I was fascinated by the first Alien movie, now it’s back in the hands of the man that created it, can’t wait! Noomi’s a great addition, I saw the same movies Scott saw, she’s great!
*Sigh of relief*
The only aspect of this film that made me nervous (until now) was the whole “prequel”/”spacejockey” approach.
Starting from a bold original idea (and the casting possibilities) really have me excited to see this now.
JUST DON’T SCREW IT UP!!
Angelina and Charlize theron should both be in the movie.
NEG ON ANGELINA TO BE IN THE MOVIE, SHE WILL RUIN IT
+1
If Joline is involved then i am not interested.
Angelina Jolie should be in the film. She’s good at these kind of roles. Charlize Theron was terrible in Aeon Flux. It’d be nice if the obnoxious Team Aniston would stop trolling.
Angelina Jolie would be TERRIBLE for this role…. I would not be interested if she was casted in it.
@Anonymous: Way to explain your opinion. LOL. It’s funny how the only people who dislike Angelina Jolie are jealous housewives. Who cares if you — one person — wouldn’t be interested in seeing the movie. Just because you don’t like an actress doesn’t mean she isn’t marketable.
I AGREE EMPHATICALLY!
…as evil siamese twins.
So I’m guessing this is some type of new story set, kind of, in the ALIEN universe? Very oddly constructed comments.
So, PG-13, 105 minutes and Rothman will have sets repainted, yes?
Wouldn’t it be great if they shot it on film like the other Alien movies? Nolan shoots on film.
I don’t think he will be shooting on film, actually. Nolan loves it, but he’s managed to escape the 3D/digital wave that everyone once. It’s been announced that Ridley Scott and Dariusz Wolski, ASC will be using the RED Epic cameras:

Oh, OK. So….er…ummm….wha? So this does or doesn’t have anything to do with Alien?
Jolie passed on GRAVITY and now she’s going to get something even BETTER.
Anyone else hearing that Emma Watts resigned today?
Well, this is surprising. In a good way. Given the probable storyline they had in mind (a fairy tale/warning involving an alien civilisation that tinkers with DNA and gets more than it asked for), this might actually be blockbuster entertainment with heart and soul. Quite unheard of nowadays, isn’t it? There you go, Sir Ridley. Gain the crowd and give them thrill, bloodshed, decency, hope.
Wait, so is this still connected to Alien or not?
Aside from starting out as a prequel, it sounds like they’re saying it’s now an original film.
Sounds incredibly cool. But, if I were Charlize Theron I’d start looking for other roles. Ridley Scott is tight with Brad Pitt. Even more important – Jolie can open a movie, not just domestic but worldwide, and Charlize can’t. An “epic” Ridley Scott movie isn’t going to be cheap and I imagine the suits 20th Century Fox are considering that an a-one priority when funding a science fiction movie with not one, but two female leads.
Angelina couldn’t open The Tourist to save her life. So much for her so-called “star power”. Besides she’s too scrawny looking to play this role. I bet the folks at WB are happy she passed on Gravity now. Boy did they dodge a bullet. Sandra Bullock has a proven track records of taking roles rejected by others and making them into box office hits; Speed was originally meant for Halle Berry and both The Proposal and The Blind Side were Julia Roberts’ vehicles.
If I were the producer I’d go with Theron. She has a certain grace about her and won’t bring paparazzi drama to the set. She & Jolie are the same age, but Jolie looks like she’s been ridden hard and put away wet.
That’s your opinion that some share and many don’t.
By the way, The Tourist is still chugging away belying your assertion and hostile reviews.
Funny people with the hyper-hostile opinions of Jolie always seem to be from bitter housewives… Tourist is going to bank $200m+ worldwide when all is said and done.
$200 million worldwide is almost nothing these days. Good movies rake in that much just in the US.
Johnny Depp’s fans didn’t turn out to support him, and the Tourist was just as much his movie as Angelina Jolie’s, but, of course, people only blame Jolie, which is strange. Oh please, Depp wasn’t very good in the movie either. In terms of domestic gross, the King’s Speech is at $97 million, Black Swan $100 million, and True Grit $162 million. Those are some pretty decent movies that haven’t even raked in at least $200 million in the US. It’s hard to take you seriously when you don’t even know what you’re talking about.
The only person ridden hard and put away wet is Marilyn with her dumb and misleading comments. Angelina Jolie opened Salt, and the Tourist is doing just fine at the box office despite the poor job done by the director, producers, and screenwriters. This film’s target audience won’t give a damn about what jealous housewives think.
The Theron/Jolie character isnt even the lead, so doesn’t need to “open” the film. Jolie doesn’t stand a chance.
Thanks for the update, Miss Cleo…
Asbell is KING!
Star Trek won. They’ve learned.
Angie please!
Yeah, yeah, Damon, we’ve heard your PR bullshit before. And look what we got in the LOST finale, a glowy cave and a sappy TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL episode.
Spaights will end up getting credit also here. Lindelof can’t write anything truly original. He rode on JJ’s coattails for LOST and is already trying to spin his involvement here…
Amen brother. Glad to see there are some of us immune to the wool folks are getting pulled over their eyes. Lindelof ain’t the second coming.
@He rode on JJ’s coattails for LOST
That’s outright wrong.
JJ only supervised the first handful of episodes before leaving to work on The Catch and MI:3. He was gone from the show waaay before the show’s creative peak. Everything alse was Damon. Even David Fury admits that the “Locke in a wheelchair” idea that hooked everyone onto the show was all Damon’s idea.
@Spaights will end up getting credit also here.
Question: Does Jeffrey Lieber get any credit for his involvment in Lost? No. It all went to JJ and Damon for invigorating the project. And the exact same thing is happening again for Aliens.
CONGRATS to Noomi Rapace and Sir Ridley (and, of course, Damon Lindelof).
All that remains is Rapace’s well-deserved Oscar nom…
YES!! thank you. Not another bloody prequel sequel script by Marketcast. Finally an original idea.
Can you imagine Noomi and Angelina together in a movie, with even the possibility of Charlize…WHAT? coupled with a kick-ass story. Don’t know that many people who wouldn’t wanna see this movie! There was nothing for Angelina to work with in Gravity but here, damn!!
the moment you have angelina in this movie, there goes any sense of realism. she’ll bring her hollywood persona onto the screen, like it or not. plus the fact that this sounds like another film altogether now… very disappointing.
The official release title will be “Alien: Prometheus” that’s a foregone conclusion. There’s no way they’ll release it without the word Alien being the prefix. They’d be crazy to do that same way they’re no longer releasing Caesar it’s now titled Rise of the Apes.
It’s seems Noomi Rapace is the new it girl that will be shoved down our throats, being cast in and starring in everything with a decent story line or budget for the next few years, until the next it girl comes along.
It will be interesting to see how her agents and managers guide or milk her career for all it’s worth before the shine wears off.
I wish her all the luck in the world and go for it Noomi, while it lasts. Today’s audiences are fickle beasts indeed.
It will be interesting to see where Ridley takes us with this new story. I’m sure it will be a fun ride.
Noomi Rapace? I’m in!
I knew from the get go Ridley Scott wouldn’t return to the genre that made him (science fiction) just to make the 7th movie about dudes being chased down dark corridors by an Alien. It’s been done over and over again and would have no appeal to someone like Scott.
Anywho, this is great news. Ridley Scott is one of the real out there thinkers in the science fiction (the plots of Alien & Blade Runner are simple but there are some fun out there ideas in the film) so I’m looking forward to see what he could do with an H.R. Giger influenced universe that isn’t restricted by having to do a checklist of classic Alien moments.
I’ve read some of Jon Spaihts’ work and it’s strong on sci-fi action but weak on story. Perhaps he’s improved but his dialogue and his characters are paper thin.
Ridley Scott is not always ‘ace’ and I hope that he gets a good script that could make this interesting.

BTW – The title sucks!
