Video: Doings Cup for the Devils

Hinsdale Central has had plenty of practice accepting the annual Doings Cup trophy. The Devils won their 11th consecutive title Saturday with a come-from-behind 34-27 victory over Hinsdale South at Dickerson Field in Hinsdale.

Central was powered by quarterback Brian Owens' big day. The series between District 86 sister schools started in 1983 between Central coach Gene Strode and South coach Dave Smith. The annual game came much too long after South opened in 1968.

After Friday's practice, brothers Danny and Patrick Ormiston hosted a team cookout for members of the Hinsdale South boys golf team at their Burr Ridge home. The Hornets tied for the West Suburban Gold title Sept. 26 at Willow Crest Golf Club in Oak Brook and compete in the Class 3A Naperville Central Regional Tuesday at Naperbrook.

But what would a team cookout be without a little golf? Danny and Patrick's father, Brian, built a nearly two-hole course in the family's front yard. The course shares one green. The first tee even includes a ball washing machine. The second tee is a short chip shot from just in front of the their house's living room.

On Sept. 27, the family attended the practice rounds and opening ceremonies for the 39th Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club.

"We camped out at No. 17 in the grandstand behind the green. It was kind of cool. We saw most of the players," Patrick said. "I will remember it forever that I watched the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Chacon (pictured right) and defending state champion Morton earned the No. 1 seed at the Argo Sectional for the Class 3A state boys soccer tournament.

The IHSA released the playoff pairings Friday:

Class 3A

Class 2A

Lyons defeated Morton 1-0 in the Pepsi Showdown final Sept. 23 to hand the Mustangs their first loss of the season, but Lyons earned the No. 2 seed at the Argo Sectional. The two teams would have a rematch in the sectional final. Morton eliminated Lyons from last year's playoffs.

The other Class 3A top sectional seeds are Sandburg at Lincoln-Way Central, St. Charles East at York, Palatine at Conant, Maine West at New Trier and Naperville Central at West Chicago.

The top Chicago area schools in Class 2A sectionals are Lake View at Ridgewood and Wheaton Academy at its own sectional.

The state boys soccer finals will held Nov. 2-3 at Lincoln-Way North in Frankfort.

Saturday was supposed to be a big day for the Dorrance family of Willowbrook.

The kickoff for the 31st annual Doings Cup football game will be at noon Saturday at Hinsdale Central's Dickerson Field. For the first time, father and son will be on opposite sides of the field for a varsity game. Veteran coach Tom Dorrance is the defensive coordinator for No. 11 Hinsdale Central (4-1). His son, Jake Dorrance, is a junior two-way lineman for Hinsdale South (4-1). Central has won the last 10 meetings against District 86 rival South.

But Jake (pictured right) will not be able to play in the game. He suffered a concussion June 28 during summer workouts and has missed preseason practice and just recently received clearance to return to the playing field. The only problem is that he has not participated in enough practices as regulated by the IHSA to be eligible to play Saturday.

Up until this week, Jake Dorrance has been forced to stand on the sidelines with his team during games, but in shorts or blue jeans with his game jersey on.

Lattner's legacy lives on at Fenwick

Legendary former Fenwick player Johnny Lattner not only attends every football game this season, but a flag bearing his name and retired jersey number of 34 flies beneath the American flag at home football games at Morton West in Berwyn. Lattner, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1953 at Notre Dame, recently posed with his four grandsons currently playing for the Friars (from left): junior tight end Ryan Smith, senior receiver Danny Lattner, senior defensive back John Lattner and junior running back Robert Spillane. A fifth grandson, Luke, is a senior basketball player and does not play football. Luke is the twin brother of John. Spillane also plays on the basketball team. Dominique Millette and the rest of her Hinsdale Central teammates will hold a Pack-the-Place night for their nonconference match at 6 p.m. Wednesday against St. Ignatius.

The Wolfpack were ranked No. 4 in the preseason Top Ten by the Chicago Sun-Times and feature three Division I players in Hinsdale resident and setter Sophia Dodd (Wake Forest), outside hitter Camille Evans (Connecticut) and middle hitter Casey Harris (Illinois-Chicago).

The Devils are led by Virginia-bound setter Meghan McDowell.

The Pack-the Place festivities are part of homecoming week for Hinsdale Central. The school's student council will hold a raffle during the match and T-shirts and other prizes will be distributed.

La Grange Park neighbors turn rivals for a day

Nazareth sophomore girls volleyball coach Sue Keck, the club director for Western Springs-based 1st Alliance/Lions Jrs., originally told me about Benet's Sheila Doyle and Nazareth's Emily Milligan living across the street from each other in La Grange Park. I circled my calendar for Sept. 8 for when the two East Suburban Catholic Conference rivals would finally meet at Nazareth.

Big school, underdog team

Sun-Times: Lyons hands Morton first loss in Pepsi final

Can you still be an underdog when you're the biggest school in the state?

I think you can if you're the Morton boys soccer team. The underdog role suit the Mustangs perfectly last season as the school won its first state title in any sport since softball in 1986. That was the first year East and West combined to compete under one Morton banner. Today, the enrollment of both schools in Berwyn and Cicero add up to a whopping 8,170 students. No other school can come close to that.

Morton's previous state title for a boys sport was baseball in 1970 for East.

Morton, the defending Class 3A state champions, are back again moving to 15-0 after beating Hinsdale South 1-0 Thursday night in Darien.

The Mustangs will play their biggest game of the season at 12:15 p.m. p.m. Sunday in the Pepsi Showdown final against Lyons (10-2-1) at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Wrigley Field, but moved back to its usual home.

Morton is fun to watch. The players lack the size of usual suburban super powers such as recent state champions from Lyons (2009) or New Trier and Barrington. Its biggest and best player is 6-foot-2 defender Joel Leon, who plays in front of returning keeper Ian Chacon. The Mustangs win with speed. Lightning quick speed propelled by someone such as varsity newcomer Abel Guzman, a 5-foot-3 senior with a team-leading 12 goals this season. As you can detect, getting Guzman and Leon in the same picture can be a challenge.

After winning the state title, Morton no longer feels like an underdog.

"Everyone has a target on us right now," Guzman said.

"We're undefeated," Leon said. "Now we want to go all the way undefeated."

That didn't happen last season as the Mustangs lost three times.

English is not the team's first language. Players speak Spanish on the playing field. All 26 players on the roster are Hispanic, but coach Mike Caruso shouts instructions from the sideline in English. Some other key starters are Giovani Garcia, Julio Pedroza, Luis Alvarado and Robert Avila.

These are the players that have become the foundation for a rising power in the state soccer scene.

Salute-to-Service Game goes annual

Friday night's Salute-to-Service game between Lyons and Downers Grove North was such a big hit that it will become an annual tradition between the West Suburban Silver rivals.

Lyons beat DGN 31-0 in Western Springs, but the football game had a higher purpose as Lyons honored area veterans in an effort to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Organizer Jason Brauer, a Lyons assistant football coach, estimated that the event raised $20,000.

Lyons was led in the game by senior quarterback Zachary Mahoney (pictured right), who threw for 218 yards and two TDs.

The announcement for the annual game was made via Twitter @LTTVSports.

Lyons golfer swings "Fore the Y"

Former Lyons boys golf teammate Nick Florek inspired Ryan Hudson.

Florek, who graduated in May, organized a fund-raiser last year to raise donations for autism. It was an idea that Hudson wanted to duplicate and for the past few months, the senior from Western Springs has balanced his commitment to the Lyons golf team with school and is the organizational master mind behind the first "Fore the Y," which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Chicago Highlands Country Club in Westchester.

The "Fore the Y" scramble features nearly a dozen threesomes and is sold out. Members of the Lyons golf team are unable to play due to IHSA restrictions, but each team member was asked to organize a threesome involving students, family or members of the community.
BGOlyonsryanhudson.jpg
The Highlands is the home course for Hudson (pictured right) and his younger brothers Dan and Jonathan, who have helped the defending Class 3A state runner-up become the state title favorite with four tournament championship victories already this season. Hinsdale Central became the first school to beat Lyons with a one-stroke win Sept. 8 in the Batavia Invitational at Fox Valley Golf Course in North Aurora.

Donations will go toward the establishment of a junior golf program for the Greater YMCA Chicago. As a junior board member to the YMCA, Ryan Hudson was surprised that the Y had no formal program for golf. Hudson comes from a golf-crazed family and wanted to help. His goal is to raise $10,000.
