Girls Volleyball: St Ignatius defeats Marian Catholic

Updated: September 17, 2012 8:45PM

St. Ignatius’ Camille Evans said she mostly was concerned with hitting smart in Monday’s match at Marian Catholic.

She sure didn’t hold back her power swing.

“I was trying to find some way to change match-ups, but I couldn’t come up with a good solution for her. She definitely gets up well and hits hard,” Marian Catholic coach Ryan Summers said after Evans led St. Ignatius to a 25-21, 21-25, 25-18 victory.

The 6-foot-1 Evans put down 14 kills. Rachele Lock added eight kills, Sophia Dodd six kills, 15 assists and 20 digs and Jana Brusek 15 digs for the Wolfpack (9-4).

Marian Catholic (12-3) was led by Amber Clay (14 kills), Kendyl Todd (seven kills), Colleen Rynne (20 assists), Taylor Byas (19 digs) and Nicole Manno (14 digs).

“It was a really good match,” Evans said. “Marian Catholic is always real good and they’re always good competition. We’re getting better. We’re going back to the drawing board at practice, trying to figure stuff out.”

Late breakaways were the difference-makers in all three sets.

Evans was the spark for St. Ignatius in Set 1 with three kills during a 7-2 run that took the drama out of what was a 19-18 battle.

The Spartans trailed 21-19 in Set 2 when Clay landed a kill from the back row and ignited a 6-0 run that also featured back-to-back kills by Debra Miller and a set-ending ace by Manno.

The final set saw Marian Catholic close a 16-10 deficit down to 16-15. The Wolfpack, however, pulled away via some big hits at the net by Dodd and Kristen Somerville.

“In the 12 wins we have this season most of the teams were at 19 to 20 points right down the stretch,” Summers said. “With these guys, we didn’t close it out like we have in the past. That was kind of the difference.”
