Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Russ loved to tell me, "Ebert, the damn films still play! Because he owned all his distribution rights, he knew they did. He had 35mm prints of his most successful titles constantly circulating, and believed "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" could have become another "Rocky Horror" if Fox hadn't been ashamed of the X rating.

I think the one he was proudest of was "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" That was because it was made on his usual bargain basement budget, filmed with a small crew, and continued to be in demand. A few days before this appearance on Conan O'Brien, Russ called me and said, "Who else has a drive-in movie made in 1965 that they want him to talk about 35 years later on network TV, because it's still popular?"

The Cramps cut a good live version of the title song, which appears on 1983's SMELL OF FEMALE album.

For additional lurid thrills, 1965's MUDHONEY also delivers the goods. Hal Hopper's character "Sidney Brenshaw" is among the sleaziest to ever appear in a Russ Meyers movie.

And that's saying a LOT!

Great column, but your link to the review of the film appears broken . . .

Ebert: Fixed.

Hi Roger, I was the guy wearing the "Faster Pussycat. Kill! Kill!" T-shirt who greeted you and Chaz at the entrance of The Castro Theatre. Just to clear the air: Though I was well aware that your contribution to Russ Meyer's canon was through your "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" script, I didn't have a BVD T-shirt, so I hoped to honor you indirectly by wearing a T-shirt of Pussycat. By the way, I absolutely loved "Julia." Thank you for choosing such an excellent film to share with us. And while I'm at it, I just want to say, you're one of three people that fuel my passion for cinema, the other two being Tarantino and Scorsese. Can't wait to see your new show!
