SME champion

Each central government department has nominated a small and medium enterprise (SME) champion to help small businesses by providing advice, guidance and support in gaining government contracts.

Opening up government procurement

In 2011 the government announced it would change the way departments do business, so that small companies, charities and voluntary organisations could reach the best possible position to compete for government contracts.

To build on the good work already underway, each central department has now nominated an SME champion.

Home Office SME champion

The Home Office SME champion, Ian Forster, is now responsible for driving forward the SME agenda within the department. Ian has the authority and influence to challenge and shape process, and to initiate, lead and deliver change on the ground.

To find out if you qualify as an SME, you can read the definition on the European Commission website.

If you have any further questions regarding SMEs they can be directed to us through our dedicated SME Enquiries mailbox.

Product surgeries and pre-engagement

Stephen Allott, crown representative for SMEs, is heavily involved in SME pre-engagement events across government. Pre-market engagement provides an excellent opportunity for SMEs to shape a formal tender.

As Stephen Allott says 'If the first time you spot the opportunity, it's already formally gone to the market, you are behind the game'.

If you are interested in being part of a product surgery, please contact ERG Service Desk or alternatively contact SME enquiries for Home Office contracts.
