Home Office Science group structure

Led by the chief scientific adviser, the science and research group includes specialists across the whole range of scientific disciplines.

The group includes physical scientists and engineers; economists, social researchers and operational researchers; statisticians; and veterinary, medical and biological scientists.

Vital role

It has a vital role in underpinning the Home Office’s work, both policy and operations, with the best science and technology available:

• to ensure a sound evidence base to inform choices and development of policy
• to enable the front line to deliver
• to take the long view effectively, by appropriate horizon scanning and openness to new challenges and possibilities
• to take responsibility for regulation as required, and for bringing in the best external expertise through our scientific advisory committees

The science secretariat

The science secretariat supports the work of the chief scientific adviser, acts as a central point for science in the Home Office and manages the department’s science advisory committees.

The secretariat is made up of scientists and generalists and focuses on:

• developing and implementing the Home Office’s science strategy and co-ordinating the department’s annual science plans
• providing support to the Home Office chief scientific adviser and ministers on cross-government science issues
• managing the secretariat for science advisory committees
