Securing the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Home Office was responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the 2012 Olympic Games. Find out about how we planned the Olympic security and other work to make the Games a success.
The focus of the government and everyone involved was to to deliver a safe and secure Olympic and Paralympic Games that London, the UK and the world could enjoy:
- we had a robust safety and security strategy
- we thoroughly tested our plans to see how government departments, police and emergency services could respond to a range of incidents
- security officials and the police met regularly with the International Olympics Committee to ensure our plans were firmly on track
With these plans in place, the British public truly helped to make the Games a huge success, and allowed us all to enjoy a summer celebrating British culture and sporting achievement.
Olympic legacy
Now the Games are over, we hope our security plans will leave a lasting positive legacy:
- communities will be more resilient against crime and the threat from violent extremism
- relationships between police and other security agencies will be improved
- experience and knowledge learned from hosting the Games will help make other major sporting events - including the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in 2014 - even safer
