Complaining about unlawful treatment

Prior to the Equality Act coming into force, there were multiple pieces of legislation to cover discrimination. This included (among others): the Race Relations Act 1976, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. These were mostly repealed and revoked when the Equality Act was commenced.

If a person wants to complain about possible unlawful treatment, there are two separate processes depending on when the unlawful treatment took place:

Process for complaints under previous legislation

  • for unlawful treatment occurring before 1 October 2010

Process for complaints under the Equality Act 2010

  • for unlawful treatment occurring before 1 October 2010 that continued after this date
  • for unlawful treatment that occurred on or after 1 October 2010
