Ross Family Movie Challenge: 'Jumanji' vs 'National Velvet'

Everett Collection (2)

Every week EW’s Dalton Ross and his wife, writer Christina Kelly, have a…um, lively discussion about what movie they should watch with their two children (Dale, 12, and Violet, 9) that weekend. Now they make their cases publicly and you get to vote on the choices and decide how the Ross family will be spending part of their weekend. The power is in your hands, people. Last week, the underdog hoops classic Hoosiers was unable to mount a fairytale comeback against Christina’s pick of Big. Read on and then vote for which movie they should watch this week.

Dalton’s Pick: Jumanji (1995)
Board games are fun. Especially when I win. I particularly like destroying my family in Sorry!, because it is quite possibly the most sarcastic board game in existence  — looking someone dead in the eye and saying “Sorreeeee!” as you blast their game piece back to Start. My children share my affinity for board games and each have their specialty: Dale is ruthless in Monopoly, while Violet takes particular joy in besting me in the 1961 Barbie Queen of the Prom game. (She always lands Ken as a boyfriend while I get stuck with dorky Poindexter.)

The point is, we dig anything involving cards or a die. Which makes it surprising that we have never watched Jumanji. You all probably know the story of the movie better than I, seeing as how I have never seen it. All I know is Robin Williams plays some dude that played the game 25 years ago, only to get stuck in its universe until some young whippersnappers (including a pint-size Kirsten Dunst) inadvertently release him… as well as some stampeding rhinos and elephants. I’m pretty sure someone turns into a monkey at one point. And David Allen Grier makes lots of “What the…?” faces. Regardless, this film appears to have it all — a bitchin’ board game, elements of fantasy, and Robin Williams not wearing a fat suit and wig. Please do the right thing and vote Jumanji as the winner this week. Otherwise, I am destined for another date with Poindexter.

Christina’s Pick: National Velvet (1944)
I finally won last week, but I don’t feel good about it, because I chose Big mainly to ensure a victory. This week I am remaining true to myself by proposing an old movie. Old movies never win, but they should, because they are awesome. National Velvet stars Elizabeth Taylor as a young equestrienne who dreams big, wins an important race, and then is not allowed to keep the prize because she is female. This, I am sure, will provide fodder for a deep family discussion about sexism. Just kidding. The only film commentary I can get out of my son consists of one word answers such as “good,” “ok” and “popcorn.” Still, what’s not to like about a horse movie set in 1920′s England, made in the 1940s, and starring gorgeous Elizabeth Taylor? If voted in, National Velvet will be a hit with the kids. They like movies about characters who chase their dreams. And though we are not horsey people, the three of us did watch and enjoy Secretariat, starring Diane Lane as the strong-minded owner of the famous racehorse from the 1970s.

Nickelodeon renews 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' reboot for second season

Nickelodeon’s rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles only premiered last weekend, but the series has already been renewed for a second season.

The network announced that it would be ordering 26 more episodes of the cartoon, which pleased Nickelodeon over the weekend with notably high ratings. Nick plans to air the second season next year, though no specific premiere date has been set.

It’s easy to see why the new TMNT series was renewed so quickly: Last Saturday’s series premiere ranked as the top telecast among viewers aged 2 to 11 (6.2/2.1 million), particularly boys aged 6-11 (8.2/837,000). Additionally, it gained Nick’s highest ratings for boys aged 2-11 of the year so far (7.5/1.3 million). Overall, the premiere drew 3.9 million total viewers, making it the week’s top-rated cable program for kids.

Tags: , , TV

Jimmy Fallon will have some celebrity company when he guest-stars on iCarly this Saturday: His old SNL “Weekend Update” co-anchor, Tina Fey, is joining in the family-friendly fun, EW has learned. In the episode, titled “iShock America,” Fallon is so impressed by a few spoofs of his skits that were performed by Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) & co., he asks them to perform live on Late Night. The 30 Rock star/creator makes a brief cameo appearance during Fallon’s video chat invitation, which sends the gang packing for the Big Apple.

Saturday’s one-hour episode kicks off the second half of the Nick comedy’s fifth and final season, which wraps up in November. (Upcoming episodes include appearances by Emma Stone and the guys from Pawn Stars.) Fey, of course, will soon bid farewell to her show, as NBC’s 30 Rock kicks off its seventh and final season on Thursday.

Will you be kicking back with NickMom tonight?

Nickmom

After all of the hours upon hours that you’ve probably spent watching Nick Jr with your kids, the network is rewarding you with a new primetime comedy block targeted to moms starting tonight (Monday, Oct. 1) 10-12 p.m. Four new shows will debut: NickMom Night Out, a stand-up comedy series, MFF: Mom Friends Forever, which follows two besties who run a video blog together, What Was Carol Brady Thinking?, a sort of pop-up video version of The Brady Bunch with Carol’s imagined thought bubbles; and Parental Discretion with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, a talk/variety show hosted by the comedienne/author (Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay).

Wilder-Taylor’s show is the most promising, with its (safely) edgy humor. Her standup is pretty good but  her on-site visits (she crashes a kid’s birthday party in the first episode) really hum. Some of the other segments are great fodder for Wilder-Taylor, like ”You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby,” which calls out old commercials for their sexist takes. Segments like one on a helicopter mom don’t immediately click, but  are definitely worth keeping an eye on. The clip below is a sample of her trip to a tattoo shop looking for mom-appropriate ink (but you should check out the birthday party one tonight when she makes a party princess actress blush with a prostitute reference and gets heckled by some kids). Just for Parents: Cynthia Nixon takes on 'The Cursing Mommy': EXCLUSIVE NSFW CLIP

Tags:

No doubt many moms will get a kick out of New Yorker humorist Ian Frazier’s new first novel, The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days, which revolves around one easily-frustrated married mother of two boys as she tries to deliver a sort of how-to guide for accomplishing various tasks around the home. But the real surprise is the fun of listening to Cynthia Nixon voice the audiobook version. Any doubt about how well the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy award-winning actress can accomplish the necessary modulated-to-frothing-at-the-mouth tone is erased after listening to our exclusive clip after the jump.  It’ll remind you of Miranda’s better rants on Sex and the City.

Seriously though, don’t listen to the clip if you’re easily offended by foul language. It is called The Cursing Mommy after all. But it’s like she’s reading my mind, guys!

Rick Riordan on 'The Mark of Athena' and encouraging reluctant readers -- EXCLUSIVE TRAILER

Mark-of-Athena.jpg

Rick Riordan is the best-selling author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Kane Chronicles, as well as the Tres Navarre mysteries for adults. His latest series, The Heroes of Olympus, is a sequel to the Percy Jackson books told from the perspectives of seven different demigods. The Mark of Athena, the third book in The Heroes of Olympus series, brings together the characters from the first two installments — The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune — on a quest to defeat the earth mother Gaea. The best part? Annabeth, who’s been around since the days of The Lightning Thief, will finally get her say. Riordan took the time to speak with EW about his newest book — and why his wife and kids are his best editors. When you’re done reading the interview, check out the exclusive book trailer for The Mark of Athena below.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: My dad told me to tell you that you have big kids among your fans too. He wants to know if there will be another Tres Navarre novel.
RICK RIORDAN: [Laughs] You know it’s not anywhere in the near future because the kids books are keeping me so busy. I love [the Tres Navarre series], so not anytime soon, but never say never.

Why did you turn to children’s literature? What drew you to it?
Well, I was a middle-school teacher for many years. My students knew me as a storyteller. I would do mythology tales in the class and they would always say, “Mr. Riordan, you should be a writer.” I would always put them off and say, “No, no, I already write for adults.” It took me a while to figure out my students were right. It really is the audience I know best. What really triggered it for me was when my older son Haley was having trouble in school. The Percy Jackson story was something I told him as a bedtime story. That’s where the series came from. READ FULL STORY »
