NBC burns off 'Munsters' reboot as special

Tags: , News

So much for that Munsters reboot! NBC announced today that Mockingbird Lane, the high-concept update of the ’60s black and white comedy, will run instead as a one-hour Halloween special on Oct. 26.

NBC will pair the pilot with a special episode of Grimm dubbed “La Llorona.” Rather than offer an explanation as to why the project from Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) was abandoned as a potential series, the network released this statement from Entertainment President Jennifer Salke: “This exciting new take on a memorable series will definitely blow out conventional wisdom and create its own legacy. Teaming this new show with a terrifying episode of Grimm makes the perfect pre-Halloween fright-fest.” READ FULL STORY »

'Nashville' ratings smother 'Chicago Fire'

nashville-hayden-panettiere.jpg

Nashville, the best-reviewed new drama of the fall, premiered to solid ratings Wednesday night, while The CW’s new action-drama Arrow set a record for the network.

ABC’s country music drama delivered 9 million viewers and a 2.8 rating among adults 18-49. That’s enough to win the hour in the adult demo, topping CBS’ CSI (10.6 million, 2.6) and the premiere of NBC’s new series Chicago Fire (6.4 million, 1.9). But Nashville was down 15 percent from the launch of Revenge in this slot last year. NBC’s fire-fighting drama was largely panned by critics and had a disappointing launch, down 21 percent from the debut of Law & Order: SVU in this slot last fall. (Nashville averaged a score of 84 on Metacritic while Chicago Fire had a 49).

Yet here’s something interesting: Of the three dramas in the hour, the Connie Britton series had the weakest audience retention from its first half to its second. Chicago Fire didn’t shed any of its demo rating between its half hours — which is pretty rare for a show premiering this late at night. Nashville may have a bigger rating, but Chicago Fire did a better job of keeping viewers in their seat.

Another key debut last night: The CW’s Arrow (4 million, 1.3 rating) got off to a fine start. READ FULL STORY »

Men at Work, TBS’ comedy from Breckin Meyer that stars Danny Masterson and Michael Cassidy, has nabbed a Gossip Girl to appear in the show’s second season.

Jessica Szohr — best known as Vanessa on the CW drama — will play Jenny in an episode that tapes this Friday and will air sometime in 2013. Here’s the official logline: “Jenny is the drop dead gorgeous friend of Neil’s girlfriend, Amy. Jenny is rarely, if ever, without a boyfriend, so there is this rare window of opportunity that both Milo and Gibbs want to pounce on.”

Other guest stars slated for Men’s season two include Seth Green, Peri Gilpin, J.K. Simmons, Joel David Moore, John Michael Higgins, Sarah
Wright, Jason Lee, Bethany Joy Lenz and Ben McKenzie. Men in Work, which follows a newly-single dude named Milo (Masterson) and the friends who are helping him re-enter the dating scene, premiered in May. TBS already ordered 10 more episodes that’ll launch next year.

New daytime talk shows: Who's up, who's down

Five new talk shows are attempting to fill the large void left by Oprah Winfrey in daytime — and, as expected, it’s not so easy to drum up a following in an already crowded daypart dominated by vets like Maury Povich, Dr. Phil and Ellen DeGeneres.

Among the new shows that launched this fall, Steve Harvey and Katie Couric are leading but the race remains thisclose against Ricki Lake in women 18-49, the demo most coveted by advertisers. Harvey and Couric have a better lead over the competition among women 25-54, where newbies like Jeff Probst and Trisha Goddard are struggling to gain a foothold.

Here are the final ratings for all the new syndicated yakkers for the week of Sept. 24 (when Lake, Probst and Couric finished their third week on the air while Goddard wrapped her second and Harvey, his fourth). For perspective, Povich was in the top spot last week among women 18-49 (1.5) and women 25-54 (1.7).

Each ratings point equals roughly one million viewers in that particular demographic. READ FULL STORY »

'Made In Jersey' cancelled

Made-in-jersey.jpg

Somewhere, The Mob Doctor is smiling.

CBS is pulling Friday night legal drama Made In Jersey from its schedule after only two episodes. That makes Jersey the first cancelled TV show of the fall. Undercover Boss will join CBS’ Friday night lineup starting Nov. 2, with CSI: NY advancing to 9 p.m. Until then, repeats of NCIS and Hawaii Five-0 will help fill the night.

Made in Jersey debuted to weak reviews and low ratings, premiering to 7.7 million viewers and a very slight 1.1 rating among adults 18-49. Last week, the Janet Montgomery drama dropped to 5.8 million viewers and a 0.8 rating. Undercover Boss has proven to be a solid Friday performer and having the reality show in the 8 p.m. slot should help CBS’ surviving dramas on the night.

CBS’ other new dramas Vegas and Elementary are considered likely to get full-season orders later this week. No clear sense yet of the fate of new comedy Partners.

Most predicted Fox’s The Mob Doctor would be the first cancelled drama (including us). But there’s a rumor going around that Fox has quietly decided to air all 13 episodes. Fox hasn’t confirmed this, however. With Fox’s baseball coverage and a presidential debate pre-empting Mob Doc in the short term, we’ll just have to wait and see.

What do you think will be the next new fall show to get the boot?

Eric Dane cast in Michael Bay's new TV thriller

That’s Captain McSteamy to you.

Former Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has lined up his next role: Michael Bay’s post-apocalyptic TNT pilot Last Ship.

The project is based on a 1989 novel by William Brinkley and follows the crew of a naval destroyer who might be the only survivors left on the planet after a nuclear war. Dane will star as Captain Tom Chandler, described as “a career Navy man and a loving father and husband who’s never home as much as he’d like to be. Chandler is authoritative, decisive, fair, courageous and a born leader, respected and loved by men and women in his command.”

Hank Steinberg (Without a Trace) and Steven Kane (The Closer) wrote the pilot, which will be directed by Jonathan Mostow (U-571). Bay, Steinberg and Kane are all executive producers. Other cast members include Michaela McManus, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Christina Elmore and Sam Spruell. Dane is leaving Grey’s Anatomy after six seasons on the medical soap hit.

If Last Ship gets a series order, it’s bound to draw comparisons to ABC’s similarly high-stakes nautical thriller Last Resort (which, ironically, is the new lead-in for Grey’s Anatomy).

'Dr. Horrible' TV ratings kinda horrible

dr-horrible-singalong-blog.jpg

This was one of the biggest mysteries of the fall: How many people would tune in to watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog on The CW? How many might watch a a low-budget, if beloved, web series on television after it’s been free online for years?

Here’s the answer: 566,000 viewers and a 0.2 in the adult demo.

Is that good? Bad? Well, if Dr. Horrible were a new show this would be as terrible as Bad Horse’s whinny. It’s also less than The CW’s program in this slot last week, the very little-seen music competition series Next (you have no idea what I’m referring to, do you?). But Dr. Horrible is not a new show. Another person could look at these number and go: Wow, a video that’s been on YouTube for four years got 566,000 viewers! And a more flattering comparison is The CW’s summer show The LA Complex, which only did a little better in its premiere with 646,000 viewers. READ FULL STORY »

'Arrow': 6 things to know about tonight's premiere

Tags: , News
arrow.jpg

The CW’s Arrow is not only the network’s best new show, it’s also one of the the best freshman fall shows on any network. Is it a CW bite-sized hoodie-wearing version of Batman Begins? A bit. But if you’re going to be inspired by a superhero origin movie, that’s a great place to start. Below are six things to know about The Green Arrow’s return to TV tonight:

1. He’s just called Arrow: Though Arrow is based on The Green Arrow comic books, showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg have shortened the character’s name, reportedly to sound less comic-book-ish.

2. He’s not a liberal. The DC Comics version of Arrow is famously considered a very left-wing character. Kreisberg told critics last July that some of that sensibility will remain, noting “there are some echoes of the One Percenters and Occupy Wall Street within the show.” But star Stephen Amell later told EW that the “liberal” tag was overblown by the media. “I think it’s a mistake to say Oliver Queen is a liberal superhero targeting the wealthy,” Amell says. “He’s targeting people who abuse their powers. Now is that mostly going to be the wealthy? Sure. Is Arrow a Democrat? Absolutely not. Is he a Republican? No, he’s not that either. He’s an idealist. And he’s going after a certain type of person, not a certain class of people.” READ FULL STORY »

ABC Family ends 'The Secret Life of an American Teenager'

Now Shailene Woodley can pursue that film career fulltime: ABC Family has decided not to renew the five-year-old The Secret Life of an American Teenager for another season.

The drama from Brenda Hampton (7th Heaven) will air the first of its final 12 episodes beginning in March, according to Deadline.

Teenager not only served as a springboard for the Golden Globe-nominated Woodley — who starred in The Descendants opposite George Clooney — but served as a beacon of light for the Down Syndrome community because it cast Luke Zimmerman as Tom, the high-functioning son of Kathleen (Josie Bissett).

The drama that addressed teen pregnancy first bowed in 2008.
