Support and modernisation fund

Through the support and modernisation fund (safer future communities), groups of national voluntary sector bodies have been awarded £1.1 million to develop a programme to provide practical help and advice to local frontline voluntary groups that support Home Office objectives.

We have awarded a total of £1.1 million over this (2011-12) and the next (2012-13) financial year to support frontline voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations in preparation for the arrival of police and crime commissioners (PCCs) in November 2012.

Safer future communities

Renamed as safer future communities, the project will be delivered through a strategic partnership led by Clinks, the infrastructure charity supporting organisations working with offenders. Other partners are the Women’s Resource Centre, Drugscope, National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (working with their partner Council for Wales of Voluntary Youth Services), National Association of Voluntary and Community Action and Wales Council for Voluntary Action.   The strategic partnership will also link with a wider group of VCSE stakeholders.

By engaging with a diverse range of partners, the project will ensure that the breadth of Home Office community safety issues (crime, antisocial behaviour, re-offending, substance misuse, violence against women and girls, and youth crime) are represented.

This project will prepare, empower and modernise the sector at a local level to engage with their PCCs and provide them with support and advice to establish local VCSE networks.  These will support the sector to identify the skills and tools to develop and communicate a convincing case about local needs on community safety issues, and how these can be met. This will aim to secure more effective working between the sector, community safety partnerships, PCCs and other statutory agencies that impact upon community safety.
