A beating at Church and Brambleton

Posted to: Michelle Washington Opinion

Wave after wave of young men surged forward to take turns punching and kicking their victim.

The victim's friend, a young woman, tried to pull him back into his car. Attackers came after her, pulling her hair, punching her head and causing a bloody scratch to the surface of her eye. She called 911. A recording told her all lines were busy. She called again. Busy. On her third try, she got through and, hysterical, could scream only their location.

Church and Brambleton. Church and Brambleton. Church and Brambleton.

It happened four blocks from where they work, here at The Virginian-Pilot.

Update: Virginian-Pilot editor responds

–––––

Two weeks have passed since reporters Dave Forster and Marjon Rostami - friends to me and many others at the newspaper - were attacked on a Saturday night as they drove home from a show at the Attucks Theatre. They had stopped at a red light, in a crowd of at least 100 young people walking on the sidewalk. Rostami locked her car door. Someone threw a rock at her window. Forster got out to confront the rock-thrower, and that's when the beating began.

Neither suffered grave injuries, but both were out of work for a week. Forster's torso ached from blows to his ribs, and he retained a thumb-sized bump on his head. Rostami fears to be alone in her home. Forster wishes he'd stayed in the car.

Many stories that begin this way end much worse. Another colleague recently wrote about the final defendant to be sentenced in the beating death of 19-year-old James Robertson in East Ocean View five years ago. In that case, a swarm of gang members attacked Robertson and two friends. Robertson's friends got away and called for help; police arrived to find Robertson's stripped, swollen corpse.

Forster and Rostami's story has not, until today, appeared in this paper. The responding officer coded the incident as a simple assault, despite their assertions that at least 30 people had participated in the attack. A reporter making routine checks of police reports would see "simple assault" and, if the names were unfamiliar, would be unlikely to write about it. In this case, editors hesitated to assign a story about their own employees. Would it seem like the paper treated its employees differently from other crime victims?

More questions loomed.

Forster and Rostami wondered if the officer who answered their call treated all crime victims the same way. When Rostami, who admits she was hysterical, tried to describe what had happened, she says the officer told her to shut up and get in the car. Both said the officer did not record any names of witnesses who stopped to help. Rostami said the officer told them the attackers were "probably juveniles anyway. What are we going to do? Find their parents and tell them?"

The officer pointed to public housing in the area and said large groups of teenagers look for trouble on the weekends. "It's what they do," he told Forster.

Could that be true? Could violent mobs of teens be so commonplace in Norfolk that police and victims have no recourse?

Police spokesman Chris Amos said officers often respond to reports of crowds fighting; sirens are usually enough to disperse the group. On that night, he said, a report of gunfire in a nearby neighborhood prompted the officer to decide getting Forster and Rostami off the street quickly made more sense than remaining at the intersection. The officer gave them his card and told them to call later to file a report.

The next day, Forster searched Twitter for mention of the attack.

One post chilled him.

"I feel for the white man who got beat up at the light," wrote one person.

"I don't," wrote another, indicating laughter. "(do it for trayvon martin)"

Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen, died after being shot by a community watch captain with white and Hispanic parents, George Zimmerman, in Florida.

Forster and Rostami, both white, suffered a beating at the hands of a crowd of black teenagers.

Was either case racially motivated? Were Forster and Rostami beaten in some kind of warped, vigilante retribution for a killing 750 miles away, a person none of them knew? Was it just bombast? Is a beating funny, ever?

Here's why their story is in the paper today. We cannot allow such callousness to continue unremarked, from the irrational, senseless teenagers who attacked two people just trying to go home, from the police officer whose conduct may have been typical but certainly seems cold, from the tweeting nitwits who think beating a man in Norfolk will change the death of Trayvon Martin.

How can we change it if we don't know about it? How can we make it better if we look away?

Are we really no better than this?

"Could that be true?"

"Could violent mobs of teens be so commonplace in Norfolk that police and victims have no recourse?"

Welcome, Michelle, to the dark, ugly side of Norfolk that, as you have discovered, is rarely exposed to the sunlight through reporting.

Political correctness, community sensitivities, and, yes, politics act to muffle and muzzle this type of all too common occurrence.

My best wishes to your colleagues for a healthy physical and emotional recovery.

Thank you for sharing this

Thank you for sharing this story. While Norfolk is not home to bands of roaming teens perpetrating horrific acts of violence, 1 incident or 1 group is 1 too many! In this case the victims were white; I know of cases where the victims were black. Unfortunately, the "It's what they do attitude" exists amongst too many in our families, our neighborhoods, our schools, our police department, and our city hall.

Church and Brambleton is also the site of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument. A monument erected for a man dedicated to nonviolent social change; erected with a purpose of honoring the contribution of blacks to growth and development of our country.

Judge Joe Jordan, who conceived the Monument while on Norfolk City Council, wrote in his book We Can Make It... Together, "Again, if we must choose between jails that are overcrowded with criminals and communities that are overcrowded with criminals, we must always choose the former." He also wrote, "The Black family should lead the way in calling for close and amicable relations between police and citizens. Police should not be outsiders who come into our neighborhood during an emergency and then leave when the emergency is over, until called again to meet another emergency... (but be) ambassadors of good will."

Reporter or not, black or white, public housing or condos... the pendulum must swing & stay in favor of the protection and dignity of our law-abiding citizens and visitors. We are better!

Va. Pilot employees beating

First, I would to say, I am glad that the 2 victims are doing ok.
Second, I know that the police are overwhelmed with crime but they took this job and I am sure that during the course of going to training and school they have taken classes in psychology, sociology and have common sense to be caring citizens as well as police officers. They took this job and should be caring human beings when they are with the victims.
They act like we are just another number, they are usually the first responder at the scene and the victim or victims are hysterical and the officer should be more compassionate.
I have been in this situation and they just DON'T CARE about the victim and make comments about why were you in this area? why did you get out of the car? what did you do to cause this to happen?
Why is the victim treated like crap but when they arrest a suspect he gets all the treatment, why? because he will sue if he is mistreated...imagine that...
So to all police officers, please be compassionate or at least seem that you care about someone who has gone through a very tramatic incident that will haunt them for a long time.

Put this on the front page --- it's NEWS

This article shouldn't be burried in the opinion section... it should be on the front page of the paper.

Why was this not reported at the time?

Surely the Pilot knew about it. A racially motivated attack is certainly news.

Was it not politically correct enough to be reported?

Is civilization suspended in Norfolk after dark?

If we can't rely on the police for protection, and our new media fails to warn us of such hazards, we can only rely on ourselves.

Considering the numbers involved, I'm going to start carrying spare magazines.

Equalization

This is why I NEVER leave my house without my .45 and two spare magazines. You never know when you're going to be caught in the middle of a crime scene.

Also, if there was ever any doubt about the liberal bias of the Virginian-Pilot, covering up this politically incorrect crime against their own employees proves it.

I am angry

I am not sure what I am angrier about. This story, or the crowd of black teens who needlessly and thoughtlessly beat two white victims. Or am I just angry that this still occurs in the year 2012. Nearly fifty years after the marches and the speeches and the declaration of civil liberties for all people. Clearly we are nowhere near the dream Dr. King envisioned. I am angry. I am angry at the calloused cop who stated “this is what they do”. I am angry at the Pilot for hiding it under a bushel. How many other racist incidences have been covered? I am angry…very angry at our citizens who will let this story die. I am angry at myself for not weeping at this loss of humanity right here in our back yard. This is not the last we will see of these incidences. I think the pilot should put every story like this on the front page for all people to read. Blacks and whites should both be ashamed that is still occurs. We should be way beyond this...because, obviously, we are not.

The solution is

If the young lady was armed and trained, she could have whipped out P345 and taken out a few thugs.

RE: The Solution is

Unfortunately, had she "taken out a few thugs", she would surely have been treated as Mr. Zimmerman and again would have become the victim. Although it wasn't deemed "racially motivated", it would have been if she had defended herself and used deadly force. I, for one, would like to know why reverse prejudice is the norm and ignored by the media and virtually all justice department/law enforcement agencies?

There is no indication in

There is no indication in this story that the attack was "racially motivated." The story says one tweet mentioned concern and another tweet mentioned Trayvon Martin.

Two people were attacked and the alleged response was muted. Hopefully that warrants concern and outrage on its own.

Why is this story

only being told now 2 weeks later? and as an editorial comment? I would think that the paper would want to pull out all stops on this story since it involved their own employees.

Putting Hampton Roads on the Map

Your editorial made the Drudge Report. No telling where this goes from here.

Parents need to know where

Parents need to know where their kids are at night. Neighborhoods need to police themselves. Citizens need to stand up to bullys, even if they run in packs of 30. ALL citizens of Norfolk should be ashamed of this incident.
So much energy and work have gone into restoring the Attucks Theater. It is an exciting venue, and features a diverse line-up of entertainment. It is a shame that many of the city's citizens will now think twice before enjoying all this historic theater has to offer.
On another note, I am appalled at the number of posters who would turn our city into a Wild West Show. "if they throw a rock at you, shoot 'em. If they throw a punch at you, shoot 'em. If they call you names, shoot 'em."
That will do NOTHING to solve the problem. Besides, with Virginia's gun laws so lax, many of those juvenile delinquents were probably packing. For the victim to have pulled out a gun would have initiated a fire fight.

Perhaps

Pulling a gun may have initiated a firefight but under virginia law a juvenile with a gun is illegal in most cases. A lot of those comments stem from frustration. It unfortunately is about race. For whatever reason black youths seem to think they are entitled to beat anyone of a different race in Norfolk and there are gangs of them running around at all hours of the night. These same youths are in the schools during the day (you know the one where they need tasers to keep them in line) and do get away with everything upto murder on a daily basis. Usually the pilot just goes "tut, tut, those poor misguided youths" and buries the story, just like they did here. Sometimes the case is so over the top and widely seen that they have no choice to report it as in the beating death case. It is not a good situation and getting worse.

Despite having a disability,

Despite having a disability, I am fully capable of defending myself well. Sometimes I feel like I try to keep the patrons (which includes children) in order at my library a bit too harshly, but some of them need it.

criminals will always have

criminals will always have guns because laws do not matter to them, so adding more barriers to gun ownership will do NOTHING to solve the issues.
The children, especially teens like these, need better role models and better parenting. They need to be punished when necessary, and they need to be praised when necessary. I am from a broken family and lived in poor neighborhoods. I was a "latch-key kid" my dad was always working trying to provide for my sister and I, so I could have turned out to be a thug. Despite his many faults, my dad found time to give us praise when we accomplished something and made him proud. I overcame the odds and am still overcoming some of them, and am a respected member of the community, having several board positions (one of which I am a director, and another I am a co-chair, the rest I am a member) No doubt my grandparents strong influence on myself and my sister had a positive role.
So, there are better ways than just shooting, but just keep in mind that criminals do NOT care about gun bans. It just means that the citizens are much more vulnerable to crime if they are unarmed.

Law-abiding citizens, that

Law-abiding citizens, that is

Why did I have to look at Drudge to find this story??

Why wasn't it on the front page of the Pilot the day after it happened? Perhaps because it was a crowd of black youths attacking a white couple, and not the other way around, which surely would've resulted in international media coverage? Shame on the Pilot for selective, politically correct reporting- especially when it involves your own employees. I hope they both recover quickly, physically and emotionally.

A beating by a gang of young

A beating by a gang of young thugs, perhaps as many as 30, is not a simple assault. The police coded it wrong. While a Pilot reporter may not pay much attention to a simple assault report when making checks of police files, the fact that 30 or so young people were involved and that the newpaper knew the facts first hand should have prompted immediate coverage, regardless of who was involved. This is political corectness run amuck and the editors should have run the story immediately. One wonders how many such crimes are listed as simple by the police when they are not. The only thing that I see the young victims did wrong was to open a car door. The driver should have left the scene, running over anyone in the way. I can only hope the police will take such gang crimes more seriously in the future and that The Pilot will report them. My thanks go out to Michelle Washington for her report. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the editors who apparently tried to supress the story. It should have been on the front page.

It is unbelievable

It is unbelievable that The Virginian-Pilot would BURY this story for two weeks for politically correct reasons. That is sad and disgusting. Someone should be fired or resign over the decision not to report this attack. It is a sad enough commentary on our society and community to read about how the responding police viewed this crime, but for our only newspaper to decide that they will hide from the truth rather than report the truth is PATHETIC! Any attack by a mob of people on any innocent victim should be put under a bright spotlight for all involved to be judged and exposed as appropriate, and to make sure that the criminal justice system does its job to protect those who obey the law. Thank you Michelle Washington for writing about this incident. Will the Pilot now get busy and report on this as they should have? Will they report on those who tried to keep this out of the public eye? You can't fix what you didn't do for two weeks, but you can do your best from today on. Will you?

Just wondering...

How do you know if the crime was or wasn't reported to the police? How do you know if its possible that the victims didn't want their story to be publicized until now?

How do you know?

There is a police report. It has a date.

How do I know??? Are you serious????

The article clearly says the victims called 911. The article clearly says officers responded. The article clearly says the officer reported the attack as a simple assault. That's how I know this was reported to the police.

Irresponsible Pilot

For weeks the Pilot was part of the mob inflaming the mob.
It was the Duke lacrosse players all over again.

Unfortunate but not surprising

As an unfortunate resident of Norfolk I am not at all surprised that not only did this happen but that it went unreported.I have been the victim of 4 car break-ins and an attempted car jacking.I called the police after the first 2 car break ins and with nothing but the following quote from the police officer "you should keep your doors unlocked and your windows down so they do not have to break anything to get into your car".Upon the 3rd break in the cops were already called because they had broken in to numerous cars at my complex. When I was awoken and not told what was going on they told me to come downstairs where I found my car broken into again. When I got very upset I was told that I better calm down or they were going to arrest me!They asked if I wanted to file a report and since the previous 2 reports did nothing I declined. By the time the fourth break-in occured I just cleaned up, payed all the money to have the window replaced and moved on.The attempted car jacking occured on my way home one evening when my car was surrounded by some "gentleman" that hit my car with rocks, screamed at me and tried to pull me out of the car. I was able to drive off and decided not to call the police. What was I going to tell them "a bunch of guys in jeans and hoodies attacked me". There is no police presence or has there been in my "redevelopment community" so proudly touted by our governor. It is a nightmare and those of us that obey the law have to look out for ourselves.

Correction

I am referring to our mayor not our governor.

How terrifying!

My empathy to those who had this terrifying experience and then didn't have support from police or your employer. I hope you are receiving the suport you need to resolve all the pain and feelings that were inflicted on you, and have a speedy recovery. Perhaps you can get an opportunity to write your own side of the story for publication, and can sue the police department for failure to uphold community safety.
How did a group of 100 not attract attention for police to be called before this happened???
To be surrounded by a mob of 100 and beaten by 30 of them should make this crime a felony assault - a major crime to be investigated seriously. Anyone reading this, consider for a moment how you would have felt in their place.
Not considered a hate crime??? How could 100 people be involved in anything like this and not be filled with hate? Unless there were those who didn't speak out because they also were afraid of their "friends"? Are good people being bullied into beating strangers? Something has to be addressed and steps taken to prevent this type of action before it becomes common and people get killed. Other commentors recommend guns - an escalation that merely condones violence. Arrests, prevention, and family services are needed - and maybe more police and street cameras!
Sadly police /local governments all over like to supress crime to keep a good reputation for their city, but keeping this quiet is irresponsible on everyone's part. Responsibility for the next occurence belon

Unbelievable!

I cannot understand why the Va Pilot has hidden this story for 2 weeks! That is unbeleivable!!! This is ridiculous and downright shameful. I am very upset about this. This is information that needs to get out so that somebody can clean up the streets, ie.. the police getting more involved, politicians ect... I`ve read about this stuff happening in other cities but thought our area to be immune to this, that we all get along really well here compared to those other cities. Sadly, I was mistaken. As such something needs to be done and done now. I and my wife like to go downtown to the resturaunts and such on the weekends. I will think twice about it now and if I do go I will be armed. I have a permit to carry and will excercise my right to do so.

There's More to This Than Meets the Eye

The Pilot owes readers -- and a national audience, now that Drudge has picked up the incident -- a detailed explanation of why and how it covered up this story.

Given the paper's direct political ties to the Obama administration, the paper has a LOT of 'splaining to do.

(Maurice Jones, former publisher of The Pilot, was appointed deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in March: http://hamptonroads.com/2012/03/senate-confirms-virginianpilot-publisher-hud-post)

It certainly serves the administration's purposes to have stories of black-on-white crime suppressed in the wake of recent national interest in the Trayvon Martin story.

In contrast, it is hard to see any benefit The Pilot itself gains from hiding this event, since doing so is clearly a violation of professional ethics.

This from a newspaper that repeatedly pontificates on the need for "more sunshine" in public dealings!

Journalism standards or a lack thereof

This is so indicative of seclective journalism it isn't funny. I agree with John, except that this story and mea culpa/apology on the front page should occur. This is why newspaper subscriptions are dropping like flies and readership is down.

VaPilot just another arm of "Progressives"

Mele and Luzzatto are so far into what our current Federal Attorney General (he's Black, you know) described as "brainwashing" the masses that they have stopped publishing letters to the editor that disagree with their editorial claptrap.

They have turned Frank Batten's newspaper into a political "rag." He would have thrown these clowns out long ago if he were still here.

Where's the OUTRAGE?

This has been going on for years

at the Pilot. It used to be just the editorial pages. Now they're practicing the new brand of liberal journalism, unethical journalism by omission. I canceled my subscription long ago. Thanks to Drudge, this story saw the light of day. As for the Norfolk PD, had it been a white off-duty cop and his wife being beaten by a group of black youths, I'm sure they would have treated it as a non-event, routine call telling the wife to shut up and get in the car and not taking statements or talking to witnesses. This is what happen in a society that's pandered to the demands of race hucksters who threaten violence like Sharpton and Jackson and carves out special protection under the law for minorities elevating their humanity as more important then their non-minority fellow citizens. We need a reinvigorated Tea Party to march on Washington demanding white people receive equal protection, treatment and justice under the law! Why hasn't the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the City of Norfolk for abetting and allowing the civil rights of these victims to be violated with indifference? This is not isolated but systemic through the United States.

Thats how I found out about

Thats how I found out about it, in fact, it was a patron at the library I work at who was having trouble downloading the story off of Drudge, as did I, I found it blocked on my own account, and I believe the city does not want the story exposed or for their own employees or patrons to find it, so thank you patron and thank you Matt Drudge!

Church and Brambleton

Where is AL Sharpton and Jesse Jackson??? EVERYONE knows if this were 30 white kids beating a black couple The Rev.'s Al and Jesse would be on T.V. , in front of the White House and everywhere else to get justice in the name of race. There would be demonstrations and all kinds of ruckus. But since 90% of America KNOWS these two are two of the BIGGEST civil rights activists ( and BIGGEST RACISTS) in this country, but only when it comes to white on black crime, we will NEVER see them utter a single word on this topic. The people of Virginia need to arm themselves and stop this behavior. Something like this should only happen to me. I am usually armed with 13 in the weapon and at least 24 more rounds. That would pretty much take care of almost the entire crowd, and it would be self-defense. Too bad the reporters were not armed.

Al & Jesse care about is

Al & Jesse care about is fame and money. Otherwise, they would be in our hoods and on our streets day in and day out protesting the crimes and murders against every black person and they also do not care about white folk, or probably any other minority for that matter.

Church and Brambleton

This rag did NOT have the decency to print this story for TWO WEEKS???? Why, is it bad for Obama??? This rag should be shut down and the editors thrown in jail. This type of story, especially when it involves your own reporters should have been printed the next day. The police should be ashamed of themselves and a MAJOR investigation as to what that cop was thinking should be conducted. Maybe they should make him a crossing guard, since he obviously does NOT know what he doing with a real crime.

Maybe we can sue

Maybe we should sue them just as the families did at virginia tech. Here is a clear case of a crime committed and no one alerted to it for two weeks. That creates an unsafe atmosphere. The VP railed against virginia tech for not closing down the campus but apparently feel it is okay to not have the same consideration for the citizens of Norfolk.

They're a part of the

They're a part of the LAMEstream media and they have an agenda, reporting this did not fit their agenda.

Beating???

Living less than 1 mile from ithis intersection and travelling through it literally every day I shudder for one reason or another how upsetting to not be made aware of this gang related beating that occurred.

Church and Brambelton

Shame on you, Norfolk and The Pilot. This should have been brought to light years ago. My daughter was promised that the area around her condo would be "cleaned up" and safe. It is far from it. Her car has been broken into numerous times. The windows broken, nothing stolen because she knows better than to leave anything in the car. She would love to get out of Norfolk but can not sell her condo, the word is out about the CRIME in Norfolk. The police have all but blamed her for her car being trashed and would not even take a report. She works hard pays her bills and trys to do the "right thing" in every aspect of her life, and still the criminals run the town. Again, SHAME ON YOU NORFOLK AND THE PILOT. I pray for my daughter's safty every night!

The take-away from all this ...

stay OUT of Norfolk after dark.

We now have a $100,000/year retired Navy captain hired to encourage military families to settle in Norfolk. This can't make his job any easier.

I wonder if he's found a safe place to move into from Virginia Beach?

Good point!

Good point, Donald. I do wonder what the $100K publicity guy has to say about this? That should be an interesting read.

Portsmouth Too

This happens in P-Town too. I live in VB now but was staying with my sister in Cradock for a short time when I was waiting for my condo to be ready for move in. We were simply out walking her dogs one evening (maybe around 7) and a group of about 10 black girls mistook me for someone else and came after me, saying they were going to punch me and what would I do if they did. One girl threw a punch but thankfully I am a runner so I was able to get away from them and find a good samaritan that let me in their house but when the cops came they could care less and actually expected me to WALK BACK HOME in the dark with my sister. I insisted they drive us in their car and they seemed annoyed. Thankfully some neighborhood watch folks that actually gave a damn did drive around to try and find the girls but nothing came of it. My sister actually ended up moving to VB, as she never felt safe walking down her street after that.

Last week I read a report in

Last week I read a report in the non main stream media of systematic refusal to report these "Justice for Trayvon" type attacks. There have been more than a few nationwide. Perhaps the Pilot would like to come clean and tell us how many. I smell conspiracy. The media tells us what they want us to know. Maybe it's time to put the media under the saem type of scrutiny as gun owners. What's good for the goose, you know. Licensing, oversight, restrictions, etc. Hopefully the Pilot is feeling a little guilt for crucifying Zimmerman before all the facts came out, and the media's general role in inflaming blacks to perpetrate these attacks.
Mob violence and attacks are virtually ALWAYS a legitimate reason to employ deadly force, and it is a Felony, not a reason for parents to ground their little gremlins. It is called disparity of force. Two against 30 is certainly a disparity, even if the mob "had no weapons." Like it or not, that's the prevailing legal standard, and it is a good standard to have.
If that had been me, the police would have had no problem IDing the suspects. They would have been the ones bleeding on the ground. I carry a concealed handgun where ever the law allows and I am NOT going to let a mob beat me to death. Shoot the close ones and the rest will scatter.

Beating other people is NOT

Beating other people is NOT getting Justice for Trayvon. This is getting ludicrous.

I sincerely believe that the

I sincerely believe that the Pilot has acted irresponsibly, and has, by omission, out right lied to its readers. You buried the story, probably out of fear of having to deal with the likes of Jackson, Farakhan, Sharpton and others. If you are afraid to report the truth, then you are no longer deserving of having readers.

This crime, had the roles been reversed and it was two blacks attacked by thirty or more whites, would have made the wire services. All you have done is show your lack of journalistic integrity. This was a hate crime, it should have been reported as such, and treated as such by the police.

Man bites dog

It is the old adage, when a dog bites a man that isn't news but when a man bites a dog that's news. They don't report these attacks because they happen a lot. If thirty white teens attacked a black couple that would be news because it doesn't happen often. Think about it for a minute. Black on black, white on white, or black on white violence = not news. White on black violence = news. Now tell me the paper isn't racist.

Heard about this

I heard about this yesterday from a neighbor and was appalled. I cannot believe that the Pilot did not report the incident the day after it happened. Is this NEWS? YES. Is it Important NEWS? YES. I find it hard to believe this was classified as "simple assault" The reporters stayed home for a WEEK recovering. Simple assault.....? A Policeman told the victim to "SHUT UP and get in the car"....I have heard it all now...and am disgusted on many levels..

I could hear the newsroom editor...

it was white victims? They're not victims, they probably offended the young black children who were probably walking home from choir practice. Can't be a hate crime, the Attorney General says so. Bury it.

Let's get some of those ABC pic's of George Zimmerman without blood running down the back of his head, they'll look great on page 1 and take the heat off this story.

Unbiased reporting...PUKE!

Why the coverup? Two reasons.

In my view, it is not coincidental that this was essentially covered up until now by the Virginian-Pilot.

Why? Two reasons.

First, Maurice Jones, the publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, is nominated (and maybe already confirmed) for a position in President Barack Obama's administration. So, hush hush.

Second, Norfolk knows that if the majority of people feel unsafe in Norfolk...and arguably they are not safe, especially downtown and after dark...then businesses will be hurt badly, including the whole Granby Street restaurant area and MacAurhur Center which are within walking distance from where this assault took place.

I work in Park Place, and

I work in Park Place, and have lived in less safe places than Norfolk. But, there is some truth to what you said. And the cops here generally do not help. They're too busy harassing people who are standing at bus stops (waiting for buses), and people who are sitting on their porches, or people who are using public library services, and not fighting real crime.

Reprehensible!

Not only am I disgusted by the way the police force has acted in regards to their treatment of the victims, their lack of concern about the attack and how this was classified as a simple assault, I am also THOROUGHLY disappointed in and disgusted by The Pilot. I will no longer read the pilot. I will encourage all small business owners that I know to remove any advertising they may have. Once upon a time journalism meant that the journalists were out to provide the public with the truth - now it has simply become a liberal train ride. Here's the information we think you need, and that's all you will get. If it doesn't tie in with the party line, it doesn't hit the press. It is ridiculous & outrageous that such a story was not only held back for 2 weeks, but to this day has not had a story written on it. The article today was an op-ed piece. Where is the in depth journalism telling us how many other attacks like this have occurred? Where is the journalist who should be contacting other "simple assault" victims to see if they too were attacked by a mob? Where is the data telling us how many of these attacks have occurred throughout the country?

Oh yes. I know where that story is.... unwritten, never to be told.

Wow

This is wrong on so many levels. The Pilot in not reporting the story has proven itslef not to be a media outlet, but a tabloid. Gone are the days that there was a journalistic code of ethics to report the news, not be the news, and let the reader decide.
The police in there reaction proved that they have forgotton that their's is a duty to protect and serve, not cop an attitude while intimidating the victim. And, as is par for the course, the leadership, or lack of leadership, at the police department closed ranks and provide an excuse for the incompetent actions of the officers.
Lastly, city leadership, that will surely fail their citizens in not demanding an investigation, and holding the police accountable for failure and dereliction of duty.
And for the person that talked about having a gun, you are exactly the person that shouldn't be carrying a gun. The purdent thing to do in this situation is to get the heck out of there. Don't get out of the car, put it in drive, and take the ticket for running a red light, as I am sure that the Norfolk PD has time for writing tickets as they aren't doing anything else. To play tough guy, and get out of the car expecting that a gun, or worse killing, will solve the problem is just nuts.

This is the Norfolk PD we

This is the Norfolk PD we are talking about here....

MISDIRECTED PAYBACK

We are and have been caught up in a maelstrom of a heavy dose of MISDIRECTED PAYBACK as we whites pay for the sins of those who kept black slaves centuries ago here in our country. If you don't think that's enough, fasten your seat belts because on another front, the 'Reconquistadors' to our Southern border also are getting their day in U.S. courts and in the press ... as seen almost daily in the news.

One of the problems is that all news is not proportionally reported, as proven by this story NOT being on 'page one' as it ought. This story absolutely deserved national recognition.

However, I reckon that this is part and parcel of the fallout of MISDIRECTED PAYBACK, payback that every white person living in this day and age had absolutely nothing to do with. The slave-owning whites of long ago might deserve this payback, but not present day whites.

Regret being a Pilot subscriber

I find it hard to believe that the Pilot does not consider this story newsworthy. I assure you that if the races were reversed, it would be front page news. The Pilot seems to have found space to publish the racist cartoon on 5/1/2012 by Walt Taylor implying that hard working poll employees are fat, lazy, bigoted southerners keeping blacks from voting through voter identification rules, but somehow this story got buried. I'm ashamed to be a subscriber to this newspaper!

Especially as it included

Especially as it included their own reporters, so if I was the reporter who was in that situation, I would quit working for the Pilot and move somewhere else.

That is just plain wrong,

That is just plain wrong, first of all that Trayvon Martin was killed, second that the "responsible" media did not report this sooner, and the teens were black, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, these people are likely more interested in causing problems than in solving them. Anyone who is outraged over the tragic death of Travon Martin should be rallying and protesting and trying to solve the injustices and being active at civic league and other community meetings, and beating other people for no reason (or for any reason) IS NOT HELPING to do anything.
These teens are among those who make black people look bad. They are a part of the PROBLEM, not the solution. It is time for people like these teens to GROW UP and get an education especially on doing things that are constructive for helping improve things for fellow blacks (which, in turn, benefits the entire community) I doubt the great Doctor King would support this violence these teens did. He would probably condemn them. The civil rights marches Doctor King led were non-violent, and that is the best way to do things.
I pray for these teens...

Kudos

I just want to say a BIG thank you to Michelle Washington for putting this piece out there. I hope she does not get fired for it and if she does that everyone who commented raises H**L about it. I have already seen posts about this being deleted and think this thread probably has a limited life span. So much for a free press. Th VP is a Democratic Liberal Hack newspaper and I am now sure that what we DON'T hear from them may be as important if not more important than what we DO hear.

I just realized that the

I just realized that the Martin Luther King Memorial is in that intersection. Took me a moment. Clearly, these thugs are clueless and dumb. What a DISHONOR to Doctor King to have done such a wicked and disgusting thing right there. (It shouldn't be done ANYWHERE, but seeing how it was done in the presence of a memorial to a GREAT CIVIL RIGHTS HERO... These kids a fools and morons.)

They have NO clue about

They have NO clue about Doctor King.
It was still very wrong nevertheless

Canceling!

As soon as I get home this afternoon, my subscription will be canceled. Thank goodness it was due for renewal in a week and a half anyway!

Kudos to Ms. Washington for getting this story out, hopefully it will not put her in any danger.

Now to find another print newspaper...

Genie is out of the bottle

The genie is out of the bottle. Deleting this thread or story would further show how out of touch the Pilot is. The story has already been picked up by Drudge(who publicized it), WorldNetDaily, the Blaze, and the wonderful Glenn Beck. So, go ahead and delete this story/thread. It won't work. That would just smack of a "cover up", which would make things worse. The public has a right to know about incidents like these and they have a duty to report the story, not bury it two weeks after the fact in an opinion piece. Good job to Ms. Washington for the piece though.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

It is indisputable that anyone getting beat while minding thier own business is an unfortunate event, but this is being read into way further than it needs to be. No one is going around committing these types of offenses with the intentions of getting revenge for Trayvon Martin regardless of what anyone in the background says, that's just ludicrous. This situation is simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Furthermore any man who in the company of a woman chooses to confront a mob rather than driving off bears some responsibility for injuries she incurred, she should be as angry at him as she is the mob. Stuff like this happens everyday on both sides of the spectrum, If you don't have any street smarts, STAY OFF THE STREETS. These situations have more to do with have and have nots than black or white. These kinds of groups of thugs were doing this before Trayvon Martin and will continue to do so after he is forgotten, so that angle is irrelevent even if that was said. Sometimes life isn't fair, they should have drove off, get over it.

Cat's Out of The Bag

It was on the O'Reilly Factor tonight. Actually a pretty balanced segment for that program, including a local radio talk show host.
It did not reflect at all well on The Pilot's management of this story.

News Reporting

Ms Washington, thank you for breaking this story. Too bad that it had to be an opinion piece, rather than a news article.

Mr. Finley, your memo is, quite frankly, unbelievable on the face of it. There might have been some excuse for not picking up on something that was coded as a simple assault, but when the reporters called in and said what had happened, any REAL newspaper would have followed up.

City of Norfolk: Really? Someone calls 9-1-1 twice in a row, and gets "Your call is very important to us . . ."? Really?

Self Responsibility

Everyday carry. We are responsible for liberty as individuals. I live in Downtown Norfolk. I am no vigilante, but I will not stand idle as any citizen disgraces the sacrifices made for our collective freedom.

You protect the life of a woman next to you at all costs. Attacking anyone - especially a female - is unacceptable.

Don't Tread On Me.

dead horse

I know it sounds old but...what if the colors were reversed. Well. You've got yourself a story then, don't you, Pilot, because THEN it turns into something you can SELL, like racially-motivated crime. Because this one certainly wasn't, oh no. Or was it something else, like trying to "protect" your reporters from the usual exposure one gets in the media after something major like this happens? Is that why we never see newspaper or tv journalistic types having their lives ruined by running it on the air or in the paper, like the rest of us normies would? No double standard there. Because if there isn't one, why was clearly racially-motivated beatdown never reported?

Brawl

What a drag that Norfolk provides Bill O'Reilly will plenty of fodder to fill the airwaves with his pontificating. While it truly appears someone dropped the ball here, we should keep in mind these were juveniles. I am certainly not excusing the dastardly behavior and surely this couple must have been horribly frightened. However, I have been going to shows at the Attucks for ten years and have never encountered any problems. There is always a security officer in the theater (yes, I understand this happened on the street) and when I do encounter local folks strolling nearby, they are always polite and friendly. It simply is not fair to the City of Norfolk and its people to fault them all. The kid that threw the rock and those that struck the couple should be held accountable but please don't exacerbate the incident.
