Windows 7 breaks Amazon UK pre-order volume record, ousts Harry Potter
Take it from us, your London-based sleuths, when anything sells faster than Harry Potter books or DVDs in the UK, it's scorching hot. Case in point is Microsoft's Vista successor, which has sold so well that it has beaten the Amazon UK pre-order record previously held by J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In fact, Windows 7 was able to tally up more sales in the first 8 hours of pre-order availability than Vista was able to collect altogether. Now that's what we call an upgrade.
Love the photoshop! Balmerdore!
Baldnomore?
baldsomemore?
It's better Photoshop from the Engadget gang then what we usually get, however, it is glass and a reflection so you should still be able to see through each Balmer, which you cannot do. The opacity needs to be turned down a little.
So who´s Voldemort then? Steve Jobs? lmao
The White Lord is certianly resembling a snake more and more these days...
Also:
"Harry!"
"Yes, sir?
"Dementors dementors dementors dementors dementors dementors dementors!"
CJ:
My address is forthcoming. I expect a reimbursement check for a new keyboard after I literally just destroyed mine at work from spitting my coffee all over it.
Your post is to thank.
Sincerely,
Sisyphus
I think this photoshop actually looks better than the actual Ballmer.
Best ever photoshop. Lovin' it.
I agree with Andir, Windows 7 may be better than Vista, but it is STILL Windows non the less. And everyone knows that when a Windows OS comes out good at the beginning, it starts crapping out later, and vice versa.
Remember, once you go Mac? You'll never go back... And it's true for almost everyone other than fanboys who refuse to switch no matter what happens.
Stevus Ballfoy...we meet ag...for the first time...
CJ: +1 Wizarding Wireless Networks for you.
@Neotyguy40:
No, when ANY OS (yes, including osx) has major changes in its architecture, there WILL be problems.
It usually gets better after than. XP had a bunch of problems when it came out, now it's the most supported OS ever. Same with the Vista kernel and OSX Cheetah(does anyone even remember that any more?).
I'll probably upgrade from XP x64, finally. Seems like a great OS.
Vista was a great OS.
Windows 7 simply has btter marketing and PR :-)
Vista was not great, but it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be. I had very little problems with it. But 7 really is way better than Vista was, I'm much happier with it than I was with Vista!
Adderz: "Vista was a great OS."
It's good now... it was pretty bad to begin with. That's why it got the bad PR.
Vista was delayed for years, so people expected some great stuff. It didn't deliver... XP was more stable, and people realized they had no reason to move to Vista.
Windows 7 has taken the strengths of Vista (better x64 support, Aero) and XP (compatibility), and delivered something that gets people excited.
Not just my opinion... people don't rush in droves to upgrade if there wasn't some reason to do so.
I've had very few problems with Vista on my Macbook Pro which was a clean install (naturally). I think most of the problems people have had with Vista are due to manufacturers installing bloatware on new PCs. If Windows 7 has the same bloatware installed, will they experience similar problems?
It makes me wonder if we'll be using Windows 7 for six years like we did with XP... then Windows 8 will "suck" like Vista did... and then two years after that Windows 9 will come out and be the savior....
Of course some people will still be using XP in 2018...
there wont be any windows 8!!! the world is going down either in 2012 or because of particle accelerator!!! woot woot
Vista was a good solid OS when it was released. The main problem was people were expecting to be able to run it on their old XP machines and maybe only having to add more RAM. The other problem was driver support as manufacturers didn't provide proper drivers for their devices. If you bought a new computer with Vista installed, it ran very well - because the hardware was capable of it and the drivers were written for it.
7, however, is much much better.
XP x64?!?! *jumps out of nearest window*
i'm having a great time with 7, though i think much of that is due to a clean install. when i first got my laptop from HP a little over a year ago, i uninstalled some stuff, but didn't bother with a clean install (there is a way to do it legitimately without buying a key). i also installed way too much crap over that year.
vista generally ran fine on my laptop once it was fully booted, but it took a while to boot, sometimes took forever to go to sleep etc. 7 goes to sleep much, much faster, and resumes almost instantaneously. plus there have been little UI improvements here and there that you will notice occasionally. and that's compared to Vista. compared to XP, it's a dream. whenever i have to use XP i think about how aweful that UI was.
Bill Gates IS "Voldemort"!!! he makes Voldemort look like Jesus!!! If you dont believe me, you are BLIND!!! Google "bill gates" ...bill, "The Ass HOLE" (Still calling the shots at Microcrap, NOT Ballmer his mouthpiece) is the one on here everyday causing trouble to bloggers, he admits it on here some comments down!!! His alias, though he has MANY, is "NohOne" on Engadget here!!! Give him the "HELL" he's going to get...LMAO!!!
great achievement for microsoft ! Huzzah ! Free Beers for everyone now ! (hopefully)

This isn't really as impressive as it sounds. Windows 7 beat Harry Potter pre-orders because if you pre-order windows 7 you get a huge discount, which wasn't the case for Harry Potter. Anyone who wanted Harry Potter could just have gone into a retail store on release day and bought it for the same price as they would have had to pay for a pre-ordered copy.
huh? My Borders on 32nd and 2nd had 15% off Deathly Hallows if you pre-ordered it with your Borders Rewards card. I think that was like $4 or $5 off or something.
$5 saved is not $70 saved for home premium or $100 saved for professional. That's also borders, not amazon?
Ben, the cost was £45-50 for HP as opposed to the £70 it is now. £20 is a nice saving but not earth shattering so it actually is a very impressive stat.
Yeah, you're right. 'twas what I get for skipping the article title =\
I don't remember harry potter costing in the hundreds of dollars either.
congrats!
fu steve jobs
hahaha ...how on earth do you manage to compare Win 7 with Snow Leopard ? I can only guess that you have no clue about Apple and its hardware and software ..... and that unfortunately is your loss :(
Yes, "fu Steve Jobs". fu for bringing home computers to the masses, and the GUI to the consumer desktop, and breaking smartphone software free from the shackles of the cell providers.... yes, fu. We hate all that stuff. ::roll eyes::
"breaking smartphone software free from the shackles of the cell providers."
Seriously? It's still shackled, just it's Apple who holds the keys.
@JKT
You can't say stuff like that, they might implode knowing Apple made home computing possible. I think Apple needs to remake the 1984 ad for these sheeples.
On October 20th Apple Introduced it's new line of Macs, And You'll see why 2009, won't be like 1984.
Didn't news exactly like this come out for Vista too? Record number of copies sold or ordered? Just saying, don't fall for the hype machine, it's been going on since '95 - and then the OS always ends up falling short of expectations.
Also, I am sure Jobs doesn't really give a crap, especially with this being the same week as this news:
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/19results.html
As I type this, AAPL = 202 MSFT = 26
and that is not hype.
@Skeezle: "and that is not hype."
No, but it is misleading. I'm no stockbroker, but simply comparing price A to price B is useless. You might as well say that Google @ 558.29 is kicking the ever loving shit out of Apple. Heh, they might well be, but it's not really any proof good sir. Your investment prowess needs some work.
@Skeezle
you're dumb, market cap is far more telling of a companies market value than stock price
MSFT: 236.85B
AAPL: 184.03B
I'm not gonna discredit apple and their profits, they did manage a good profit BEFORE the holidays. But Skeelze, don't use stock prices alone to gauge company value.
I'm dumb? So which stock would you rather have a thousand shares of? Not that long ago, they were close to equal.
Balmer looks cool with hair.
This time Microsoft copied 'KDE' of Linux.
KDE was designed and "marketed" as looking like Windows enough to make the transition for Windows users easier.
So Mr. Pot, Mr Kettle? I think you guys need to talk.
Anyhow, Windows never up to the mark of Linux :) These people doesnt know what the best stuff they got outside their Windows. :)) Come out and see the world. Dont just see through the Windows.
@Jay:
Don't go into marketing or advertising
Jay, in other words what you're saying is:
"Woops! I said something stupid and got my shit shoved back a fortnight. I better act nonchalant."
pretty funny pic. For once Balmer looks serious and wise...lol
I just love that image, great photoshop skills guys...
"In fact, Windows 7 was able to tally up more sales in the first 8 hours of pre-order availability than Vista was able to collect altogether"
That makes it sound like W7 sold during the first 8 hours than Vista has sold ever - but in fact it sold more than Vista sold during the whole PRE-ORDER period. Less impressive... but impressive nonetheless.
