Sydney J. Freedberg Jr. is the deputy editor for AOL Defense. During his 13 years at National Journal magazine, he wrote his first story about what became known as "homeland security" in 1998, his first story about "military transformation" in 1999, and his first story on "asymmetrical warfare" in 2000. Since 2004 he has conducted in-depth interviews with more than 200 veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq about their experiences, insights, and lessons-learned, writing stories that won awards from the association of Military Reporters & Editors in 2008 and 2009, as well as an honorable mention in 2010.

Some are liberal, some are conservative and some would claim little or no political affiliation.
