Jansen’s Fruit Market

A growing resource to gardeners since 1954

In 1954, Cecil and Janet Jansen opened what would become a blooming fruit market in Hobart: Jansen’s Fruit Market. Their open season began in the spring with spring vegetables, some flowers and vegetable plants. These goods were mostly grown locally in northwest Indiana or southwest Michigan.

By the 1960s, Cecil had expanded his business by joining forces with his two sons, Walter and Bruce. And by the 1970s, business was booming. Jack Furgye began working in 1973 as a stocker and carry-out boy. As Jack Furgye gained experience, so did Bruce Jansen.

As years passed, and with his father’s blessing and mentorship, Bruce took over the market. As demand grew in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Bruce and Jack expanded their knowledge and selections of plants and produce. They began selling many different varieties based on feedback from customers.

In 2010, Jack Furgye took over the business with his wife, Robin. Like previous years, Jansen’s opened this year in late March, selling mostly nursery stock and fresh produce. However, the market offers a much larger variety of plants than years past.

Jansen’s has five greenhouses. Landscaping nursery stock, perennial and annual flowers are also sold there. This includes hanging baskets, most new assortments of potted annual flowers, and a wide selection of flowering tropical plants.

As the seasons change, so does Jansen’s stock. During fall, when the local crops are ready, Jansen’s buys as much of them as possible. Additionally, the market keeps hay and pumpkins in stock for all your fall holiday needs.

Toward the end of the year, take advantage of Jansen’s fresh-cut Christmas trees, handmade wreaths, cemetery decorations and more. Need a holiday fruit basket for a gift? Jansen’s can help. Whether you need a basket for a teacher at school or for the whole business meeting group, you can purchase separately or in bulk. The market also offers winter-keeping potatoes and onions during the end of the year.

During fall and winter, Jansen’s is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The market will close for the winter on New Year’s Eve. and re-open in spring.
