Nintendo Download: 25th October 2012 (North America)

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Liberation, a NightSky, puzzles, free extras and plenty of monsters

The Nintendo Download update has had some good weeks in recent times, and following today's Nintendo Direct we finally have the information on today's offerings; it looks like this is another one that'll have something for everyone. With DLC, a demo, a retail release and a number of download exclusives arriving — even Wii gets one title — we should really get on with telling you the details.

3DS Download

NightSky (Nicalis, $9.99) — This is the long awaited action-puzzle title that was originally in development for WiiWare, before changing course and moving to the 3DS eShop. So many positive noises were made before its arrival, and it's lived up to all expectations with gorgeous, atmospheric presentation, clever puzzles and lots of replayability to add value for money. We gave it a perfect 10, and you can read why in our NightSky review; we can't recommend it highly enough.

Liberation Maiden (Level-5, $7.99) — The first of three titles from the Guild01 collection to arrive on the North American eShop, this is the offering from SUDA51 in which you play as the President of Japan, who fights villains by flying through the sky and shooting everything in sight. It's a new style of politics as expected from the well-known and popular developer, and offers some flashy shmup action. It's not perfect but may be worth the investment, as our Liberation Maiden review explains.

3DS Virtual Console

Ghosts 'n Goblins (Capcom, $4.99) — The trend of bringing popular NES games to the 3DS Virtual Console continues, with this one sure to get some in the mood for Halloween. As many already know this is a difficult, cruel game, though Capcom is unlikely to reimburse you if you throw and break your 3DS. It's bound to be popular amongst retro gamers despite its flaws, and you can get the low-down on it from our Ghosts 'n Goblins Wii Virtual Console review.

Castlevania: The Adventure (Konami, $3.99) — When Castlevania games are done well, they provide some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences out there, particularly for retro enthusiasts. That said, this series début on Game Boy doesn't live up to these standards, and it's horrifying for all of the wrong reasons. Before you get sucked in by the name, we suggest taking a look at our Castlevania: The Adventure review.

3DS DLC

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Level Packs (Nintendo, $2.50 each) — Two new Coin Rush level packs have been announced today and are available from the New Super Mario Bros. 2 in-game shop. These are Gold Mushroom Pack and Coin Challenge Pack B, the latter of which will have an worldwide leaderboard on the official website. We expect Mario ninjas to have quite a scrap over top spot.

Mutant Mudds (Renegade Kid, free) — The best things in life are free, apparently, so that bodes well for this DLC for Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds. This will consist of 20 new levels at no extra cost — content originally released with the recent PC version of the game — and will see you take control of Grannie, who's old enough and wise enough to use all three power-up items at once. The levels will be found as extra CGA-themed doors in each regular stage, with the visuals matching the primitive style of the early '80s tech that inspires them. Oh, and they're free with new and existing copies of the game, in case that wasn't clear.

3DS Retail Download

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (Level-5, $39.99) — Available from 28th October in stores or direct from the eShop, this is the first Layton title for 3DS that was originally a launch release in Japan. It has everything expected of the series, but with a revamped graphics engine and control setup, as well as some gameplay variations in the adventure. It's an excellent continuation of the series, and you can read more in our Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask review.

3DS Demo

Marvel Pinball 3D (Zen Studios, free) — Assuming you have the room on your SD card or don't already own this one, there's no real reason why you shouldn't get on the virtual tables in this demo. It's another fun bit of 3D pinball from Zen Studios, and well worth a try.

DSiWare

18th Gate (Circle Entertainment, 500 Points) — CIRCLE Entertainment has released a dizzying number of games on the DSiWare service, and has found time for another with this 2D dungeon-crawler. Played on grids and with the standard top-down perspective, this title challenges you to fight your way through 18 different areas, with three team members to use as you please. Some may get enjoyment out of this one, but as our 18th Gate review explains, strange design choices let it down.

Wii Virtual Console

Shock Troopers (D4 Enterprise, 900 Points) — The Wii Virtual Console gets another dose of Neo Geo goodness, this time in the form of a run and gun action game. You play as a team — or Lone Wolf — of mercenaries rescuing kidnapped innocents, which seems standard enough, while 2 player coop is also an option if you want twice as many explosions. We'll be getting geared up and bringing you our review soon.

So there you have it, plenty of download content for you to consider this week, with some freebies thrown in. Let us know what you plan to spend your hard-earned funds on first in the poll below, and tell us what you think of what's on offer in the comments section.

Liberation Maiden, maybe.

Ghost's 'n Goblins? I have it on PSP.

Mutant Mudds DLC? Don't have the original game.

Castlevania? It's the first game and it's absolutely horribad.

Marvel Pinball demo? I already have the full thing on my Vita and PS3.

So yeah, nothing for me this week.

What. A. Week. Honestly, so much great stuff being delivered here that it's almost baffling that anyone can come up with an excuse not to get something (Yeah, I'm looking at you, @Donjwolf). Two 3DS VC (well, more like one, but still) plus DLC, plus demo, a retail release, plus two long-awaited downloadable titles for 3DS. Nicely done, Big N. Expect some money from MrWezzle this week.

I'm most interested in NightSky, as the Mario DLC is a bit on the pricey side for me (still haven't gotten the first three yet).

Already planning on d/L'ing Layton (anyone know the block size?) on Sunday, and debating both GnG and Castlevania (just on princple, as i had it on GB back in the day, and wouldn't mind having it again despite the suckage).

As for the Mutant Mudds DLC (which i'll also be getting), are the additional levels accessible from existing save-game slots, or do you have to start a fresh one?

Pretty darn good week, but I'll only be getting the "B Pack" for the NSMB2 Coin Rush mode. I'm saving up for the awesome sauce that is headed our way, my Nintendo friends :D

OMG I have no idea why anyone would say anything negative to me. I already have the games I want on ANOTHER SYSTEM. Why would I want to buy them again for the 3DS? My post was in no way 'trolling' this update. It's actually good. Not my fault I already have the games I want on other systems. Just because I don't want anything doesn't mean I'm saying the update is sucky :P You guys just love picking on people. This is why I don't like posting in forums much.

The way I see it, there will always be bad games you don't want or games you already have and don't want to own twice. But those games are going to come anyway sooner or later. So the more games that get released, the better since that will mean the games you do actually want are likely to come sooner. I'd rather have a bad game released than no games at all.

Love this week! I'm still wondering about those two sonic games, though... We need those in order to get Columns!

I'll get when I have money:
Nightsky
Castlevania the adventure
Ghosts n goblins
Gold mushroom NSMB2 DLC
MM DLC
And marvel pinball demo.

Why is there no NightSky video preview available in the e-shop alongside the game? If I'm spending $10 on a game I feel like they should include a video clip of it.

Luigifan141 said:

@TheDreamingHawk Yeah, I've been waiting on those Sonic games since 8-bit Summer. If you search them, you can see that Sonic Blast is $4.99 and has, like, one rating given, and Sonic Labryinth has roughly 9 ratings given with no pricing listed.

I'm getting NightSky & Liberation Maiden (so glad it wasn't delayed)!

Not interested in this week's VC offerings.

Don't have NSMB2, & not the biggest fan of Mutant Mudds, so no DLC for me.

Already have MP3D, so no demo for me.

Don't buy DSiWare or WiiWare.

Great week!

Good week. But I have to say I'm a bit annoyed on how the eShop treats the Virtual Console games. If you go to the VC section, none of the new games show up. If it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't even known they exist. I almost skipped out on Ghost n Ghoblins since it's like a scavenger hunt to find it on the eShop.

@idork99 I know, right? VC is very strangely organized on the eShop. The new titles sometimes aren't advertised at all on the front page, and even when you go into the VC list itself, they're organized to where new stuff is sometimes waaaay down the list. Could use some polish.

This is a fantastic week! I don't know if I'll be getting anything right away because my time is at a bit of a premium but ever since that perfect ten I especially have my eye on NightSky.

Am also wondering about the block requirement for Prof. Layton.

None of the above... first thing I downloaded was the Mutant Mudds pack! But of the available choices, I went with Liberation Maiden first. The line "I accept my sworn duty... as the second president of New Japan!", coming from a mech piloted by a Japanese schoolgirl, sold me instantly.

@MrWezzle Agreed. The VC section in the e-shop is very disorganized. How about separate them by category, like by genre, or platform, for example? There's too many to just have 5 pages you have to scroll through. One section: Game Boy Color, another Game Boy, Game Gear, NES, etc. It's not that difficult Nintendo! And you can't do an advanced search for a specific classic platform either, the only option is "Virtual Console (all)".

Picked up Liberation Maiden and not disappointed by it. It has some challenge to it, and the anime cutscenes and voiceover work are especially well done. This is one I'll be playing for a while, at least until the other Guild01 games come out here later. :D

I want 18th gate BUT THE REVIEWS ARE DIFFERENT and not sure

Okay so what is it
FROM THIS SITE
Provided you don't forfeit a game and actually suffer the humiliation of defeat, all level and experience progress carries over to the next attempt. The intent seems to be that you replay an area over and over to get strong enough to eventually conquer it; you're not actually expected to beat all of these levels in one go.
from another site
If you do happen to find yourself overwhelmed the only solution is to start the game again as there is no way to replay old levels to grind up some experience levels.

So this site says you can replay levels but another site says YOU CANT

tempted to buy it if you CAN but it looks nothing more then a poor mans ripped off of a retooled 3 heroes

Well, at least I can save money this week. I might get Shock Troopers, but I already have SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 on my Wii. If I had a 2DS, I might be interested in Marvel Pinball 3D and Liberation Maiden, but I'm guessing Liberation Maiden uses stylus controls. I'd much rather play a game like Liberation Maiden the way I play Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, with a Wii remote and nunchuck.

I got Liberation Maiden as soon as I knew it was available. Pretty fun so far like the review said.

I almost bought Ghosts N Goblins for my NES a few months ago. Then, I saw the AVGN review yesterday and now I have to play the NES version. And I have been anticipating Liberation Maiden and Castlevania Adventure is a great deal at $2.99, though I only paid $1.99 for the sequel on the Gameboy which is sold for $9.99 which is how much it cost brand new in 1995.
